Garcia TDs Help Santiago Top Costa Mesa
Santiago High School scored two third-quarter touchdowns Friday and went on to defeat Costa Mesa, 14-6, in nonleague action before 1,500 in Garden Grove Stadium.
The Cavaliers (2-0) broke a scoreless tie with two minutes left in the third quarter when Gabe Garcia capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. David Petrutis’ first of two extra points made it 7-0.
Later, just before the quarter expired, quarterback Rick Burns and Garcia combined on a 50-yard touchdown pass-play.
Costa Mesa (1-1) scored its only points in the fourth quarter when Scott Anderson scored on a two-yard run. Paul Rodriquez helped set up the touchdown with a 37-yard run.
Santiago was led by Burns, who completed 8 for 14 passes for 228 yards, and fullback Joe Marquez, who gained 88 yards on 13 carries.
