The NFL has decided that the Houston Oilers would have scored two more touchdowns against the Washington Redskins last Sunday if officials had called two controversial plays correctly. But the Oilers said that the league’s decision doesn’t matter.
“Nothing comes out of it. We still lost the game,” Oiler spokesman Gregg Stengel said.
Jack Reader of the league’s officiating department called Oiler Coach Hugh Campbell Thursday and told him about the incorrect calls.
According to Stengel, Reader said that Art McNally, the league’s supervisor of officials, had determined through video replays that a diving end-zone catch by Drew Hill and another apparent touchdown on Steve Brown’s interception return should have counted in the Oilers’ 16-13 loss last Sunday.
“I wouldn’t call it an apology,” Stengel said. “Mr. Reader told us the two calls were an error in judgment. Officials are human.”
