Friday’s Highlights : Mazzotta’s Score Gives St. Paul 9-7 Win Over Carson

Frank Mazzotta scored on a one-yard pass from John Scott with 5:30 remaining in the game as St. Paul upset Carson, The Times’ No. 1-ranked City team, 9-7, in a nonleague game at St. Paul Friday night.

The winning touchdown was set up when Eric Diaz recovered a Carson fumble on the Colt 25-yard line.

Carson (1-1) got on the board first when junior running back Calvin Holmes scored on a two-yard run in the second quarter. Later in the same quarter, Mark Trinidad kicked a 30-yard field goal to draw St. Paul (3-0), The Times’ No. 10-rated Southern Section team, within four points.

City Fairfax 57, L.A. University 12--Tailback Michael Hill gained 234 yards in only 10 carries and scored five touchdowns in the nonleague game at University. Hill tallied on runs of 63, 87, 58 and 1 yard and also on a 76-yard kickoff return as Fairfax improved its record to 2-0. Lion quarterback Rodney Dorsett completed 5 of 8 for 159 yards and 1 touchdown. Fairfax’s backup quarterback Haamid Wadood ran for two touchdowns.

San Pedro 9, San Fernando 3--Steffan Smith ran 47 yards with just 3:23 remaining as the Pirates upset The Times’ No. 3 ranked City team in a nonleague game at San Fernando. After Ron McMillan intercepted a pass with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter, Alfonso Ontiveras kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. San Pedro tied the score in the third quarter on Mike Ford’s 26-yard field goal. Both schools are now 1-1.

Southern Section Riverside Poly 21, Esperanza 7--The Times’ No. 4-ranked team scored in the first, second and fourth quarters to dominate the Aztecs in a nonleague game at UC Riverside. Chris Brantley and Steve Tiapula both had short TD runs and Joe Adcock pulled in a 13-yard pass from Bruce Campbell as the Bears improved their record to 3-0. The Aztecs have lost all three of their games by the score of 21-7.

Arcadia 31, Temple City 7--Tailback Chris McCarn tallied on runs of one and four yards and fullback Tom Long gained 173 yards in 13 carries and scored once as the Apaches upset the No. 2-ranked team in the Eastern Conference in a nonleague game at Arcadia. Quarterback Brad Scott completed 6 of 10 for 87 yards as Arcadia won its first game of the season after two losses. Temple City’s only score came on a one-yard run by Tom Ball in the first quarter. The Rams are now 1-1.

Fontana 41, Ganesha 0--The Steelers, the Times’ No. 2-ranked Southern Section team, shut out their third straight team and have now scored 113 points in three games. Junior halfback Joe Kidd rushed for 119 yards and scored twice in 18 carries. Fullback Willie Chapman also had two touchdowns and gained 69 yards in 10 tries. Quarterback Barry Titus completed 4 of 8 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Fontana, which is now 2-1 including a forfeit loss, held the Giants to a minus 4 yards rushing. Ganesha is now 1-2.

Palmdale 37, Apple Valley 14--Toney Edwards, a 5-foot 11-inch senior tailback scored 6 touchdowns on runs of 4, 6, 3, 1, 2 and 14 yards in the nonleague game at Palmdale. Edwards gained 124 yards in 26 carries as the Falcons upped their record to 2-1. Apple Valley, the No. 3-ranked team in the Southeastern Conference is now 2-1.

Downey 17, L.B. Jordan 13--Derek Sessions rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown and teammate Gerald Waddell gained 76 yards and scored once as the Vikings improved their record to 2-1 in a nonleague game against the visiting Bulldogs. LB Jordan is now 0-2.

West Covina 35, Redlands 12--Mike Culwell of West Covina caught eight passes for 130 yards and scored twice on pass plays of 14 and 64 yards from Vince Aguilar in the nonleague game against visiting Redlands. The senior wide receiver also had two interceptions. Senior tailback Leland Adams scored three times including one on a punt return. West Covina is now 2-0 and Redlands is 2-1.

Bishop Amat 47, L.A. Jordan 0--Quarterback Rick Carter completed 10 of 16 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns and junior running back Eric Bieniemy gained 125 yards in 19 carries and scored three times including a 43-yard punt return in the nonleague game at Bishop Amat. The Lancers are now 3-0 and LA Jordan is 0-2.
