Cypress Finally Holds Off Sunny Hills

Cypress High School blew a 17-0 lead but came back with 14 fourth-quarter points to defeat Sunny Hills, 31-21, in a nonleague game in Spaulding Stadium at Buena Park.

Trailing 21-17 in the final period, Cypress drove 72 yards on the ground to take the lead for good. Quarterback Troy O’Leary capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 23-21. The extra points was no good.

Cypress then scored once more to secure the win. Blaise Bryant broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run, and after O’Leary threw a two-point conversion pass, the Centurions led, 31-21.

Sunny Hills, 1-2, scored 21 points eight minutes apart in the second half to take a brief 21-17 lead. Tim Imperiali returned a punt 45 yards to cut Cypress’ lead to 17-7, and then David Wackerman scored on touchdown runs of seven and two yards to put Sunny Hills in front.

In other nonleague games:

Canyon 17, Chaffey 7--Comanche quarterback Todd French, who set a school record with 24 completions, passed for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Canyon to the victory in front of 500 fans at Fred Kelly Stadium.

French completed 24 of 36 attempts and threw scoring passes of four yards to Matt Waddell and six yards to Chuck Zacour to help the Comanches improve to 2-1. Waddell had 9 receptions for 108 yards, while Zacour had 7 catches for 86 yards.

Canyon opened scoring with Tim Snitko’s 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, and the Comanches took a 10-0 lead in the second period on Waddell’s touchdown reception.

Chaffey cut the lead on quarterback Mike Crawbuck’s six-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but Canyon put the game out of reach on Zacour’s scoring reception in the fourth quarter. Canyon, which lost to Capistrano Valley last week, begins Century League play next week.

Santiago 17, Pioneer 3--The Cavaliers piled up 330 yards in total offense to easily defeat the Titans at Pioneer. Quarterback Rick Burns completed 8 of 14 passes for 135 yards. Burn threw one interception. Santiago running back Joe Marquez rushed for 66 yards including a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The Cavalier’s Hao Dinh opened the scoring with a 34-yard run early in the first quarter. David Petrutis finished the scoring for Santiago, 3-0, with a 32-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Bolsa Grande 39, Savanna 7--The Matadors scored 32 points in the second quarter to rally from a 7-0 deficit and rout the Rebels in Bolsa Grande Stadium.

Dana Hills 46, Laguna Beach 20--Dana Hills routed Laguna Beach to hand the Artists their first loss of the year in Spencer Stadium. Both teams are 2-1.
