Southland Roundup : Okoye Leads Azusa Pacific to 31-14 Win

Senior tailback Christian Okoye rushed for 147 yards in 23 carries and 1 touchdown in leading unbeaten Azusa Pacific to a 31-14 nonconference victory over Occidental Saturday at Azusa.

The Cougar defense held Occidental to only 21 yards rushing and 166 yards in total offense, while Azusa Pacific rolled up 371 total yards.

There were nine turnovers in the game, five by Oxy and four the Azusa Pacific.

Cougar quarterback David Russell completed 6 of 16 passes for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Azusa Pacific (3-0) has not allowed an opponent to score in the second half this season. Okoye has 408 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Oxy is 2-1.

La Verne 22, Claremont-Mudd 7--La Verne’s defense limited Claremont-Mudd to 30 yards rushing and one touchdown en route to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Claremont.

La Verne quarterback Mark Van Allen completed 15 of 31 passes for 226 yards and touchdowns of 3 and 18 yards. Claremont quarterback Steve Olson, the second-leading passer in the SCIAC, was injured early in the game, forcing the Stags to go with freshman Scott Kennedy, who was sacked five times and threw two interceptions.

Claremont averted a shutout with six minutes left on a touchdown pass play from kicker Charlie D’Agostino to Larry O’Brien on a fake field goal.

La Verne is 1-1, all in conference, Claremont 0-2 and 0-1.

Sonoma St. 23, Redlands 0--Junior tailback Stephen Robinson caught a 45-yard screen pass from quarterback Eddie Gillis for one touchdown and ran 23 yards for another to lead Sonoma State to a nonconference victory at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Redlands (1-2) managed only 75 yards in total offense. Sonoma State is 1-2.

Cal State Hayward 37, Cal Lutheran 15--At Thousand Oaks, Cal Lutheran quarterback Tom Bonds was sacked six times for 40 yards in losses in the first half as the Kingsmen (2-1) lost for the first time after two road wins.

Cal State Northridge 38, San Francisco St. 17--Chris Parker completed 22 of 48 passes for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns and junior Mike Kane rushed for 96 yards in 19 carries and 2 touchdowns as the Matadors (2-1) won at Northridge.

U. San Diego 10, Pomona-Pitzer 7--The University of San Diego scored 10 first-half points and held on for a victory over host Pomona-Pitzer. Pomona Pitzer is 0-2, San Diego 1-2.
