Southland Roundup : Hoiness Leads Idaho to Easy Victory Over Portland State, 51-17

Running back Todd Hoiness ran for 112 yards Saturday to lead Idaho to a 51-17 nonconference football rout over Portland State in Portland.

Hoiness carried 15 times and scored on an 8-yard run with 2:27 left in the first half.

The Vandals are ranked fourth in NCAA Division 1-AA, while Portland State is 15th in NCAA Division 2. Idaho’s record improved to 4-1, while the Vikings fell to 2-3.

Vandal quarterback Scott Linehan completed 21 of 35 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown.

Idaho’s defense confounded Portland State quarterback Terry Summerfield, who was averaging 335 yards passing per game. The Vandals held Summerfield to 19 completions in 36 attempts for 229 yards and one touchdown. Summerfield had four passes intercepted and was consistently forced to throw on the run.

The Vandals took away Portland State’s running game. The Idaho defensive secondary took the middle away from Summerfield and most of his completions came on short sideline routes.

Fresno State 24, Hawaii 24--Sophomore Barry Belli kicked a 29-yard field goal with 8:37 left and the Bulldogs salvaged a tie with the Rainbow Warriors at Fresno.

Trailing, 24-14, early in the final quarter, the Bulldogs (3-0-1) got back into the game on an 11-yard scoring pass from Kevin Sweeney to Anthony Mosley.

Azusa Pacific 37, La Verne 12--Christian Okoye ran for 190 yards and one touchdown to lead a running attack that amassed 395 yards at La Verne as the Cougars won their 10th straight game.

Azusa, ranked sixth in the NAIA Division II, had 565 yards in total offense, while limiting La Verne (1-2) to minus 10 yards rushing and no rushing first downs. The Cougars (4-0) have yet to allow a point in the second half this season.

Humboldt State 24, UC Santa Barbara 3--The Lumberjacks limited the Gauchos to 57 yards in total offense en route to an easy victory at Santa Barbara.

The Lumberjacks are 1-2, while Santa Barbara (0-2) still a club team, dropped to 0-2. Santa Barbara hopes to play at the collegiate level in 1986.

Whittier 14, Redlands 7--Quarterback Mike Owens had a 49-yard scoring run and Ramon Juarez ran 21 yards for another touchdown as the Poets won this SCIAC game at Redlands.

UC Davis 34, Cal Poly (SLO) 21--Junior quarterback Chris Petersen completed 14 of 19 for 213 yards and touchdown passes of 18 and 16 yards to wide receiver Randy Williams as the Aggies (2-1) beat the Mustangs (1-3) at San Luis Obispo.
