Ouch or yawn, take your pick.

Having 10 goals scored against it in a soccer game doesn’t say much for the Cal State Bakersfield soccer program. Scoring 10 goals against Bakersfield means that Cal State Northridge traveled more than 100 miles Wednesday for something it could have done at home: practice.

The Matadors, whose 3-0 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. record indicates an ability to score at will, put the hurt on Bakersfield, 10-0.

Forward John Tronson practiced what he does best by scoring two goals for the Matadors. With 12 goals, Tronson is rapidly closing in on the single-season scoring record of 20 goals that he set last season. He was also the conference’s most valuable player in 1984.

Scoring two goals along with Tronson were Frank Cubillos and Rodney Batt. Rick Gora, Thor Lee, Dean Freeman and Francisco Lobos each scored one goal. CSUN’s defensive unit continues to improve as a potential offensive threat as well.

The win also marked CSUN’s seventh shutout this season. Phil Heaver shared the goalie duties with reserve Mark Grody, who played for the first time this season. CSUN, which is the defending CCAA champion and ranked fifth in the nation, will play Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday at Cal Poly SLO at 6 p.m.
