Occidental’s 1-2 Punch Knocks Off USD, 27-14

Occidental College running backs Jeff Goldstein and Vance Mueller scored two touchdowns apiece Saturday night to lead Occidental (4-1) to a 27-14 win over the University of San Diego in a nonconference game at Los Angeles.

Mueller, who carried 19 times for 137 yards, raced 43 yards for a score with 4:53 to play in the third quarter that gave the Tigers a 27-7 lead.

Goldstein, who picked up 100 yards on 15 carries, scored his second touchdown on a 42-yard pass reception from Tiger quarterback Pat Guthrie to give Occidental a 20-7 edge at 11:12 of the third quarter.

The lone Torero points of the second half came with a second to play. Pat Dixon hit wide receiver Ken Zampese with a two-yard scoring pass. Dixon had replaced starting quarterback Mike McGarvey, who had been intercepted three times.

The Toreros (2-3) were trailing at halftime, 14-7. Occidental scored the game’s first touchdown at 13:55 of the first quarter when Goldstein caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Guthrie, who finished the game completing 15 of 22 passes for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns.
