Jan Named Player of Week

Cal State Fullerton quarterback Kevin Jan, formerly of Pierce College and Granada Hills High, has been named the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. player of the week.

Jan, a 6-2, 205-pound senior, completed 21 of 35 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for another score.

Jan also engineered the offensive drive that put Fullerton in position to kick the game-winning field goal in a 32-30 victory Saturday over Utah State.

The defensive award was shared by Daryl Knox of Nevada Las Vegas and Chris Pacheco of Fresno State. Both are from the Los Angeles area.

Knox had five unassisted tackles, including a quarterback sack to stop a drive in the second quarter, in the Rebels’ 24-14 win over Pacific. Pacheco led Fresno to a 37-17 victory over San Jose State with five solo tackles and five assists.

Given trophies (named Archies after all-time great Archie Moore) were middleweight Michael Nunn (Newcomer of the Year), and Ten Goose officials Victor French (a co-winner of the Promoter of the Year award) and Dan Goossen (Manager of the Year).

It’s been a good year for Ten Goose. The organization has succeeded where others had failed, turning boxing at Reseda’s Country Club into a regular, well-attended, monthly event.

Nunn, fighting for Ten Goose, has won all eight of his 1985 fights, seven by knockout, to boost his lifetime mark to 9-0.

Another Ten Goose fighter, bantamweight Frankie Duarte, fought a non-title bout against WBA champion Richie Sandoval, losing on a split decision.

Duarte is scheduled to fight Freddie Jackson, ranked No. 2 by the WBC, on Oct. 29 at the Country Club. Nunn’s next fight will be against Jorge Amparo on Nov. 13 in Las Vegas.
