Brea-Olinda High School saved its best for last Friday night with a 21-16 win over Anaheim in the Orange League opener for both schools.

The Wildcats (3-3) drove 91 yards in four plays in the final 2:15 of the game as Fred Camarena connected with wide receiver Steve Teran on a 59-yard bomb with 1:27 left in the game to send the Colonists (2-4) down to defeat.

Brea trailed, 16-7, entering the final quarter but Camarena, starting in place of regular quarterback Eric Oden, took the Wildcats on two long scoring drives to deprive Anaheim of the win it seemed to have clinched.

Anaheim quarterback Ernest Johnston, who completed 5 of 17 passes for 65 yards, fumbled the ball at the Brea 34-yard line early in the fourth quarter with Teran recovering for the Wildcats.

Camarena connected with Teran on a 36-yard pass play, ran a keeper for 21 yards to the Anaheim 1-yard line and then handed off to Mike Oziminski for the touchdown to cut Anaheim’s lead to 16-14.

The Colonists had a first-and-10 at the Brea 13-yard line with three minutes to play, but Anaheim Coach Roger Stahlhut elected to go for a pass attempt on fourth down at the 9-yard line that fell incomplete.

Camarena then went to work. He drove the Wildcats 91 yards for the winning score.

Anaheim had taken a 6-0 lead when Robert Ferrington fielded the opening kickoff at his 1-yard line and ran 99 yards for a touchdown.

Camarena finished with 139 yards passing despite completing only 4 of 17 pass attempts.
