Volleyball Roundup : No. 2 Mustangs Defeat Irvine in Volleyball

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo defeated UC Irvine, 15-6, 15-1, 15-10, Friday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball match at San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs (7-0, 17-1) were led by Lynn Kessler of Laguna Beach and Kelly Strand, who had 10 kills each. Setter Dede Bodnar, who played at Capistrano Valley High School, had 22 assists for San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs are No. 2 in the nation after beating then-No.3 UCLA and No. 2 Pacific in the UCLA Invitational last week. Bodnar was name Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Cindy Rohwig had five kills to lead the Anteaters.

In community college volleyball action:

Golden West 3, Fullerton 1--Freshman outside hitter Lisa Manfree led the Rustlers (7-0, 7-1) with 13 kills and 4 blocks. Kathy Wissman added 11 kills and 4 blocks for the Rustlers in this South Coast Conference match. Golden West plays El Camino, the only team that has beaten the Rustlers this season, Wednesday at Golden West at 7:30. Fullerton is 2-4 in conference, 5-5 overall.

Saddleback 3, Cerritos 2--The Gauchos moved into a tie for second place in the South Coast Conference with the win Friday night. Both teams are 5-2.
