Robert Rangel, Valencia High School linebacker and defensive captain, was in guarded but stable condition in Pioneers Memorial Hospital at Brawley, Calif., Monday after sustaining injuries Saturday in an accident near the California-Nevada border.

According to Everett Rangel, Robert’s father, Rangel, teammate Ray Pallares and some other friends were riding three-wheeled motorcycles at the Glamis Sand Dunes Saturday afternoon when when Rangel was hit by a dune buggy. He suffered a broken leg, broken left shoulder and arm injuries, and underwent surgery Saturday night.

Rangel’s parents, Everett and Cecilia, were in Las Vegas at the time of the accident. Everett Rangel said that Robert will miss the remainder of the 1985 football season. He added that he would remain at Pioneers Memorial Hospital this week before being transported to a hospital closer to their Placentia home.

“He’s in good spirits and he wants to come home,” the elder Rangel said Monday. “Our main concern is that he comes out of this OK. He’s conscious and he’s talking and wondering when he’ll be able to leave.”
