FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Kennedy Eases Past Cleveland

Kennedy High’s volleyball team had no problem defeating Cleveland in two games, 15-3 and 15-9, Wednesday at Kennedy.

Kevin McKeown led the win for the Golden Cougars with three kills on six attempts and two blocks, while Ruth Stage provided strong defense.

Kennedy is 5-0 in North Valley League play (8-1 overall) and is in first place. Cleveland dropped to 1-4 in League.

The Golden Cougars open the second round of league play at home Monday against Monroe.

Damon Lyman ran a time of 21:44 on a four-mile course to lead the Pierce College’s cross-country team to an easy 19-42 win over Mission College.

Pierce is 2-4 in Metro League and 3-4 overall.

Campbell Hall’s volleyball team had a tough time with Providence, but finally got the match win in five sets, 12-15, 15-4, 16-14, 7-15 and 16-14.

Cherise Smith had 12 kills for Campbell Hall, while teammate Jessica Ackroyd added another 10. Tracy Murray had 17 assists for the Vikings.

Campbell Hall is 8-1 in the Delphic League and 12-4 overall.

Montclair Prep improved its Alpha League record to 7-2 (10-3 overall) by beating Western Christian in four games, 16-14, 15-5, 13-15 and 15-9.

Cheryl Conly led the Mounties win with 19 kills on 26 attempts and five blocks.

Montclair Prep will play at home Thursday against La Verne Lutheran.

Western Christian dropped to 7-6 in the Alpha League.

Viewpoint faltered, then recovered to take a Heritage League win over Coast Christian in five games, 15-10, 13-15, 8-15, 15-1 and 15-5.

Liesl Dano served eight straight in the fourth set, while teammate Jenny Dole had five kills on seven attempts. Kim Fields added seven assists for the Patriots.

Viewpoint is 6-3 in league and 7-6 overall.

Royal’s water polo team set a school scoring record at the expense of rival Simi Valley, easily winning, 35-1. The previous record was 29, set in 1983.

Every player except one scored for the Highlanders in the rout, which included seven goals each for Dain Hurst, Rob Toring and Geoff Hoover. Greg Frazier and Chris Stickney each scored four goals.

Royal, 5-0 in the Marmonte League and 13-3 overall, will play Thousand Oaks on Monday. A win will clinch the fifth straight League championship for the Highlanders.

Simi is 0-5 in league and 1-11 overall.

The Bell-Jeff cross-country team scored the first, fourth and fifth runners to narrowly defeat La Salle, 27-30.

Eric Loiacano placed first with a time of 15:36 on the three-mile course, while La Salle’s Dave Rohan came in second at 15:46. Mike Gottardi was third for La Salle at 16:09, while Bell-Jeff’s Steve Peppard and Richard McNorton followed with times of 16:47 and 16:52, respectively.

The win puts Bell-Jeff at 5-1 in the Santa Fe League and 6-1 overall. La Salle is 4-2 in League.

The League Finals for both teams will be next Thursday at Baldwin Park.

Bell-Jeff’s girls cross-country team kept its unbeaten record intact, scoring the top-two runners to beat Notre Dame, 24-32.

Chris Morgan was first for the Guards with a time of 18:10, while teammate Carrisa Bongi was second at 19:58. Notre Dame’s Vicki Hosek was third with a time of 20:11.

Bell-Jeff raised its record to 6-0 in the San Fernando Valley League (8-0 overall), while Notre Dame dropped to 4-2.

Both teams will compete in the League Finals next Wednesday at Griffith Park.

Siobhain O’Reilly ran a time of 20:41, leading Alemany to a 17-45 San Fernando Valley League cross-country win over Louisville. Teammates Susie Smith and Inez Richards placed second and third with times of 22:03 and 22:11, respectively.

Alemany is now 5-1 in League and 7-1 overall.
