Cross-Country Roundup : UC Irvine Women Runners Finish Second to Pomona

UC Irvine, with two of its best runners resting for next week’s Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. championships, finished second behind host Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in the women’s division of the Green and Gold Cross-Country Invitational Saturday in Pomona.

Allison Owen finished third in a clocking of 18:28.3, Beth McGran was fourth (18:30) and Kelly King fifth (18:30.9) to lead the Anteaters, who were competing without top runners Jennifer Abraham and Beth Taft.

Irvine finished with 39 points, second behind Pomona’s 32. UCLA’s B-team was third with 52, followed by UCLA-C (128) and Azusa Pacific (174).

Cal Poly Pomona also dominated the men’s division. The Broncos finished with 33 points, well ahead of second-place UCLA-B (76). United States International University was third with 93 points, followed by Point Loma (130) and Irvine (149).

Irvine’s top seven male runners sat out the meet to prepare for next week’s conference championships.

Raymond Campbell and Barrett Agent tied for first place at 30:29, pacing the Chapman College men’s cross-country team to a 27-28 victory over Christ College of Irvine Saturday. The victory improved the Panthers’ record to 1-1.

In the women’s division, Chapman’s Sherry White placed first at 22:22 to win a non-scoring meet.
