San Gabriel Hands Burroughs Third Straight League Defeat

San Gabriel High started out quickly and held on late Thursday night to defeat Burroughs, 18-7, at Mark Keppel High.

The Matadors improved their record to 2-1 in the Foothill League and might have eliminated the Indians (0-3) from any chance at a CIF playoff berth.

“I said that was going to be the key if we were going to win,” Coach Terry Cox said of the early lead.

San Gabriel got on the scoreboard first when sophomore linebacker David Kerr picked off Jeff Barrett’s pass and returned it 45 yards with 1:55 left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion by quarterback Matt Lujan failed.

The Matadors went ahead, 12-0, with 1:18 left before halftime when Lujan connected with senior running back Mike Lucero on a three-yard pass. The score was set up when Burroughs punter Dave Tuszynski was able to get off only a 15-yard punt that San Gabriel received on the 36-yard line. Once again, Lujan’s pass on a two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The Indians’ only score of the night came when junior running back Dan Cusumano (12 carries, 86 yards) scampered 41 yards on third and 11 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. Todd Pam kicked the point after.

Cusumano’s touchdown was Burroughs’ second in four games.
