Friday’s Highlights : Fontana Comes Back to Defeat Eisenhower

Fontana, trailing, 14-6, at halftime, scored 26 points in the second half to defeat Eisenhower, 32-16, in a Citrus Belt League game Friday night at Eisenhower High.

Junior John Kidd of Fontana carried 27 times for 196 yards and scored three times on runs of 1, 2 and 7 yards.

Teaming with Kidd was Willie Chapman who finished with 164 yards and a touchdown in 20 carries.

Fontana (7-2 overall and 5-1 in the league) plays Riverside Poly (8-0 and 5-0) next Friday at Fontana in a key league game. Eisenhower is 5-4 and 2-4.

City

Lincoln 20, Hollywood 0--Wide receiver Sergio Rodriguez caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gus Aguirre in the second quarter and fullback Steve Silva ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter at Lincoln. The win insured Lincoln of its first Northern League title in 20 years. The last time the Tigers, now 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league, had a winning season was in 1970 when they were 5-3. Hollywood is now 3-4-1 and 1-2-1.

Belmont 24, Marshall 0--Quarterback Andy Chavez and Juan Leal teamed for a 72-yard pass play to break a scoreless tie and Mark Lowe returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown to lead Belmont to a Northern League win at Marshall. Belmont is 2-6 overall and 2-2 in league. Marshall is 3-4-1 and 2-1-1.

Fairfax 17, Manual Arts 0--The Lions struck quickly with 10 first-quarter points on Luis Calderon’s 28-yard field goal and Haamid Wadood’s 21-yard touchdown run. La’Trelle Barnes added a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to close out the scoring in the Crosstown League game at Fairfax. The Lions are 8-0 overall and 3-0 in league. Manual Arts is 2-4-1 and 2-2.

Banning 25, Crenshaw 0--Earl Saunders caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ed Kapu and rushed for 122 yards in 15 carries in the Pacific League game at Banning. Kapu, in addition to completing 4 of 7 passes for 106 yards, also scored on a nine-yard run in first quarter. The Pilots limited Crenshaw to 126 yards in total offense while gaining 365 yards. Crenshaw’s leading ground-gainer was Anthony Washington, who piled up 91 in 20 carries. Banning is now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in league. Crenshaw is 1-6 and 0-4.

Southern Section

Claremont 27, Chaffey 9--Dan McGwire completed 19 of 27 passes for 279 yards and 3 touchdowns, all to Travis Watkins, to lead Claremont to a Baseline League victory at Citrus College. Watkins finished with 14 catches for 245 yards, giving him 61 receptions for 975 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games. Trailing 9-0 in the second quarter, McGwire hit Watkins with a 27-yard touchdown pass to pull Claremont within two points at 9-7. Two field goals by Steve Bayer gave Claremont the lead at 13-9 in the third quarter. Watkins and McGwire struck again, this time on a five-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for a 20-9 lead. Claremont clinched the win when McGwire found Watkins up the left sideline for a 57-yard touchdown pass play. Claremont is 8-1 overall and 5-1 in league. Chaffey is 4-5 and 2-4.

Lynwood 31, Downey 0--Junior Austin McCowan scored on runs of 9 and 28 yards and quarterback Anthony Burnett scored on a 51-yard keeper in the San Gabriel Valley League game at Downey. McCowan finished with 87 yards in 10 carries. The win sets up a league title-decider with undefeated Cerritos next week. Lynwood is 8-1 overall and 5-0 in league. Downey is 4-5 and 2-3.

Edison 24, Fountain Valley 12--Edison jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead on the strength of Mike Angelovic’s touchdown passes to Rick Justice and Ken Griggs and Joe Morris’ 29-yard touchdown after intercepting a John Peart pass in the Sunset League game at Anaheim Stadium. Fountain Valley got two second-half touchdowns on Terry Reichert’s four-yard run and Peart’s one-yard effort. Edison is now 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league. Fountain Valley is 3-6 and 1-3.

Newbury Park 20, Westlake 7--Utilizing long time-consuming drives, Newbury Park kept the ball out of Westlake’s possession and limited the Warriors, who had been averaging over 39.3 points per game, to just one touchdown in the Marmonte League game at Newbury Park. Newbury Park scored first on a 57-yard pass play from Jayson Merrill to Sean Grady and then relied mainly on its ground game, resulting in touchdown drives of 92 and 72 yards. Newbury Park is now 5-3-1 overall and 3-2 in league. Westlake is 6-3 and 3-2.

Rowland 34, West Covina 20--Tommy Choi and Russ Goo each gained over 100 yards and quarterback Dave Hansen threw three touchdown passes, to key the upset of previously undefeated West Covina in a Sierra League game at West Covina High. Choi gained 109 yards in 19 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 10 yards. Goo had 100 yards in 11 tries. Hansen completed 8 of 11 passes for 81 yards. West Covina is now 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league. Rowland is 6-2-1 and 2-1-1.

Schurr 21, Burbank Burroughs 7--Quarterback Eric Rubalcava completed 15 of 26 passes for 243 and completed a touchdown pass plays of 55 yards to Danny Dalziel and 26 yards to John Brown in a Foothill League game at Burroughs High. Dalziel also gained 70 yards in 15 carries and Hubert Turner caught 6 passes for 85 yards. Burroughs sophomore quarterback Jim Barrett completed 12 of 25 for 122 yards. Schurr is now 9-0 overall and 3-0 in league. Burroughs is 2-7 and 0-3.

El Toro 24, Mission Viejo 17--Eric Bass took a pitchout from quarterback Bret Johnson and raced 16 yards around right end with 3:05 left to give the Chargers a South Coast League victory at Mission Viejo. The Diablos then got the ball on their 29-yard line with 2:58 remaining and drove to the El Toro 16-yard line. A delay of game penalty moved the ball back to the 21 and then Eric Bass’ younger brother Adam intercepted the ball in the end zone to end the game. El Toro is now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in league. Mission Viejo is 7-1-1 and 3-1-1.
