Southern Section Volleyball : Laguna Beach Surprises Hueneme, 3-0

The Laguna Beach High School girls volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section 5-A playoffs with a 3-0 victory over previously undefeated Hueneme Tuesday in Oxnard.

Laguna Beach, the second-place finisher in the Seaview League, swept the Channel League champions, 15-1, 15-3, 15-10, as outside hitter Wendy Whiting recorded 12 kills and Valerie Foley, also a senior outside hitter, added six kills and three aces. The Artists raised their record to 15-3. The Vikings ended the season at 15-1.

In other 5-A action:

Newport Harbor 3, St. Joseph (Lakewood) 1--The second-seeded Sailors (16-0) defeated the Jesters, 15-0, 15-5, 14-16, 15-10, in Lakewood to move into the semifinal against Santa Monica Thursday.

Santa Monica 3, Woodbridge 2--The Vikings, the No. 2 team from the Bay League, edged the Warriors. They beat the third-place team from the Seaview League, 15-5, 8-15, 12-15, 15-12, 15-12.

In 4-A action:

Fountain Valley 3, Long Beach Wilson 0--The Barons (14-3) were led to victory by scores of 15-4, 15-12, 15-10, at Fountain Valley. Jackie Cook led the effort with 14 kills. Also for the Barons, Jill Myers had 11 kills and 9 blocks, Christy Svalstad had 9 kills and Kellie Bruce had 6 kills and 7 blocks. Fountain Valley plays Notre Dame Academy Thursday.

In 3-A playoff action:

Bishop Diego 3, Sonora 2--The Cardinals (16-3) outlasted the Raiders, 15-12, 6-15, 15-9, 8-15, 15-10 at Sonora, behind Kiera Middleton’s hitting and blocking.

In 2-A playoff action:

Magnolia 3, Brawley 1--The No. 9 Sentinels (17-4) put together their second upset of the week, beating the fourth-seeded Wildcats (20-3), 15-12, 10-15, 17-15, 15-8, at Magnolia to advance to Thursday’s semifinals. The victory followed the Sentinels’ upset of fifth-seeded Diamond Bar Saturday.

Sophomore middle hitter Rena Rossoll had 12 kills and setter Cindy Gossmer had nine saves in Tuesday’s match. Tracy Berglund’s seven aces in the fourth game were crucial in halting the Wildcats’ momentum.

In 1-A action:

Southern California Christian 3, Northview 0--The top-seeded Flames defeated the Vikings, 15-9, 15-6, 17-15, in Covina. The Flames trailed in the final game, 14-11, before rallying to make it a sweep, as hitter Tara Cross recorded 13 kills.
