Southern Section Tennis : Smiths Double Up on Katella as Mater Dei Advances, 16-2

The doubles team of sisters Jenny and Lisa Smith led undefeated Mater Dei High School to a 16-2 win over Katella Thursday in an opening-round match of the girls’ CIF Southern Section 3-A tennis playoffs at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

The Smiths teamed to win all three sets they played, and lost only two games. The victory improved the Angelus League champion Monarchs’ record to 21-0.

In 4-A playoff action:

Newport Harbor 14, Beverly Hills 4--Margo Mullally led the Sailors, the No. 3 team from the Sea View League, to an upset win over the Normans, the champions of the Ocean League. Mullally, playing No. 1 singles, won three sets as Newport Harbor improved its record to 18-3.

Foothill 15, Palm Springs 3--Paige Denny and Missy Veiga each won three single matches to lead the Knights (15-6) over the Indians. Foothill advances to meet No. 2 Palos Verdes.

In 2-A playoff action:

Valencia 17, Bellflower 1--Diane and Donna Ewign combined to win six sets and led the Tigers past the Buccaneers at Valencia. The Orange League champion Tigers improved their record to 19-1. Bellflower ended its season 16-5.

La Quinta 16, Savanna 2--Singles players Debbie Graham and Monica Macia each won three sets without losing a game to lead the Aztecs to an easy win over the Rebels at La Quinta. The Garden Grove League champion Aztecs improved to 20-1.
