Carson’s January Is Among Prep Players to Sign

Several Southern California high school basketball players signed college letters of intent late Wednesday and Thursday.

All-City forward Anthony January, who averaged 19.2 points a game last season at Carson High School, said he will enroll at Texas El Paso. The Miners also landed another Californian, forward Antonio Davis of Oakland McClymonds.

Russell Gilson, a forward from Fremont, became the third local player to sign with Coach Larry Farmer at Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Jason Trask and John Waikle of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley had signed earlier.

Jaime Cardriche, a 6-foot, 8-inch, 325-pound center from Long Beach St. Anthony, will play at Oklahoma State next year. Guard Osei Appiah of Long Beach Poly has chosen Santa Clara.

Scott Williams, considered one of the top prospects on the West Coast, has called a press conference for today at 1:30 p.m. at the Hacienda Heights Wilson High School gymnasium to announce his college choice.

The 6-9 center, who last season was All-Southern Section for Wilson, has narrowed his choice to five schools: UCLA, North Carolina, DePaul, Villanova, and Georgia Tech.

In women’s basketball, Cal State Long Beach went to Independence, Mo., for what Coach Joan Bonvicini said will be the first of four signings for the 1986-87 season--6-4 Angelique Lee from Van Horn High School.

UCLA announced the signing of 6-0 forward Michele Wootton of Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, Calif.
