Fountain Valley Uses Defense to Smother Huntington Beach

Fountain Valley High School limited Huntington Beach to 119 yards Friday night as the Barons scored a 27-0 Sunset League win over the Oilers in front of 2,500 at Sheue Field.

Fountain Valley finished the season 2-3 in league and 4-6 overall. Huntington Beach finished 1-4 and 3-7.

Fountain Valley took a 6-0 first-quarter lead when quarterback John Peart threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Glen Gordon. The extra-point try failed.

The Barons increased their lead 14-0 in the second quarter when Jim Bloomer, who alternated with Peart at quarterback, scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 28-yard drive. Peart then entered the game, and threw a two-point conversion pass to Gordon.

Bloomer threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Arey with 1:56 left in the half to give Fountain Valley a 21-0 lead.

Fountain Valley completed its scoring with 42 seconds left when Shaun Wihongi scored on a 1-yard run at the end of a 65-yard drive.

Peart completed 11 of 14 passes for 161 yards. The Barons’ Terry Reichert rushed for 65 yards in 15 carries.

Scott Elliott rushed for 54 yards in 11 carries for Huntington Beach.
