Stark Sets Single-Season Passing Record

Capistrano Valley High School quarterback Scott Stark became Orange County’s all-time single-season passing leader Friday night while leading the third-ranked Cougars to a 38-0 win over visiting El Camino Real in a nonleague game.

Stark completed 11 of 15 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than two quarters. His 10-game total of 2,706 yards is three greater than current Ohio State quarterback Jim Karsatos’ total in 13 games for Sunny Hills in 1980. Stark also has thrown 27 touchdown passes.

Capistrano Valley led, 26-0, at the half against a team that did not score until its sixth game of the season. The Cougars enter the Southern Section playoffs next week with an 8-1-1 record. El Camino finished at 1-8.

Stark completed his first pass of the game to Todd Beightol for a 56-yard gain. Beightol also caught Stark’s final completion, a short drop over the middle on the Cougars’ first play of the second half. Beightol turned the play into the record-breaker with a nifty 41-yard run through traffic.

Play stopped after Beightol, who had three touchdowns, was tackled at the El Camino 25. Stark received a standing ovation from the crowd of about 1,000 and was presented the game ball. he team then carried him off the field on its shoulders.

After Erik Hannah added the third of his four field goals, Stark returned to the lineup, but was intercepted on his next pass attempt by Jason Cook, his second of the night. Stark did not play further.
