Mira Costa Girls Win Title in 5-A Volleyball

Mira Costa High School of Manhattan Beach rolled to a convincing 15-6, 15-12, 15-9 victory over Newport Harbor High to win the Southern Section girls’ 5-A volleyball championship at Huntington Beach Marina High Saturday night.

It was the third CIF title in four years for Coach Daelea Aldrich’s team, which finished the season with a 20-0 record. Newport Harbor was 18-2.

Marlborough came back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Notre Dame Academy, 9-15, 15-11, 15-11, 15-6, and win the 4-A title. In the first game, Notre Dame broke out of a 7-7 tie and outscored the Mustangs, 8-2 to take the game.

After dropping the second game, Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third before Marlborough adjusted and scored the final 10 points. It was all Marlborough in the fourth game, the Mustangs building a 7-0 lead. Marlborough finished the season 18-1, Notre Dame 15-3.

Top-seeded Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead had little trouble with La Habra, dropping the Highlanders, 15-10, 15-5, 15-12, to win the 3-A championship.
