San Diego Section Girls’ Tennis : Seeded Singles Players All Win

Top-seeded Katrina Crawford of Valhalla High School and the other seven seeded singles players in the San Diego Section individual individual girls’ tennis tournament all won their first-round matches Thursday.

In the doubles play, two seeded teams were upset, but the top-seeded team of Tina Kahan and Kim Rostovsky of La Jolla advanced.

The tournament, which continues today, is being held at La Jolla and Bishop’s.

Crawford, who has said she may not play in next week’s tournament semifinals or final in favor of playing in the National Indoor Tournament at Kansas City, beat Leslie Thurman of Christian, 6-0, 6-2,

Second-seeded Shannon Crockett of Bishop’s beat Bonita Vista’s Virva Rahikka, 6-0, 6-0. The third-seeded player, Christy Drage of Mission Bay, rallied to beat Diane Jezek of Monte Vista, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, while fourth-seeded Julie Coakley of La Jolla beat Bonita Vista’s Lisa Takashima, 6-3, 6-2.

Also winning in singles were fifth-seeded Carla Quarsema of Poway, sixth-seeded Nicolle Main of San Pasqual, seventh-seeded Linda Allred of Torrey Pines and eighth-seeded Tina Trumbull of Torrey Pines.

In doubles, Kahan and Rostovsky beat Suzy Levine and Pam Tenney of Patrick Henry, 6-1, 6-1. Kahan and Rostovsky finished second last year.

Kalike Yandall and Stephanie Hake of University, the second-seeded team, beat Shawn Covell and Jill Wagner of San Diego, 6-0, 6-0. Third-seeded team of Jonelle Ayson and Charissa Cosky of Mount Carmel beat Coronado’s Amy Coffman and Lisa Cox, 6-1, 6-2. The fourth-seeded team of Jeffie Demsey and Erin Helm of Torrey Pines defeated Tasia Asakawa and Sara Zarrabi of Coronado, 6-1, 6-1.
