CIF Southern Section Girls’ Tennis : La Quinta Wins 14th Straight, Reaches Final

Top-seeded La Quinta High School advanced to the final of the CIF Southern Section 2-A girls tennis playoffs for the fourth consecutive year by beating Valencia, 13-5, Thursday at La Quinta.

The Aztecs will play Indio, which beat Chaminade, 10-8, in Thursday’s other semifinal, in the final Tuesday at the West End Tennis and Racquet Club in Torrance.

La Quinta’s No.1 doubles team of Sabrina Ortiz and Kari O’Connell swept its matches and remained unbeaten in CIF play at 12-0. The Aztecs’ top two singles players, Debbie Grant and Monica Macias, also swept their matches. La Quinta, which has 14 straight wins, is 23-1.

Ortiz, a four-year varsity player, will be appearing in her fourth CIF final; O’Connell will be playing in her third. The Aztecs won CIF titles in 1983 and 1984 and were runners-up in 1982.

In 3-A action:

Mater Dei 11, Westlake 7--Shannon LaVelle swept her singles matches to help the top-seeded Monarchs to their second 3-A final appearance in three years. Mater Dei (24-0) will play San Marino in Tuesday’s final. San Marino, which beat Thousand Oaks, 11-7, in the other semifinal, beat the Monarchs in the 1983 final. The Monarch doubles teams of Sabrina Burke-Laura Spinner and Lisa and Jenny Smith also played solid matches.
