Taylor Leads Saddleback to Win Over Azusa Pacific JV

The Saddleback College basketball team defeated the Azusa Pacific junior varsity Tuesday at Saddleback, 99-92.

Guard James Taylor led the scoring for the Gauchos (2-1) with 20 points. Teammate David Miles had 19 points and 9 rebounds, Tom Desiano had 10 assists and Kendall Rogers had 12 points and 6 assists.

Saddleback, which has averaged 94 points in its three games, took the lead for good with 6:50 left on a 15-foot jump shot by Brian Sullivan, to make it 79-78. The Gauchos outscored the Cougars, 18-6, over the next six minutes. Cougar Joel Monroe was the game-high scorer with 22 and Dave Dangelis had 21. Saddleback next plays in the Santa Barbara Tournament Dec. 5.

Southern California Christian 106, La Verne 65--The Vanguards raised their record to 3-1 at SCC as forward Mike Lightfoot came off the bench to score 15 points and Ty Myles added 12 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Ken Bardsley added 14, while Robert Aviles and Chris O’Felt had eight assists apiece. The Vanguards shot a season-high 59% (45 of 77). Their next game is Saturday at Northern Arizona University.

Alvin College (Texas) 77, Cypress 66--The Chargers faced Texas’ top-rated community college team in the opening round of the Lee College Tournament, and Alvin emerged undefeated in its tenth game of the season. Cypress dropped to 1-1. Charger guard Bill Dobbs had 20 points, while forward Paul Horn scored 16 points and recorded 11 rebounds. Alvin led, 34-23, at the half. Tonight the Chargers play the state’s second-ranked team, San Jacinto.

In women’s college basketball Tuesday:

University of La Verne 73, Southern California Christian 70--The Vanguards (1-1) held a four-point advantage at halftime at SCC, but the Leopards’ 6-0 center, Jennifer Tallungan, went on to score 35 points to edge the Vanguards. La Verne’s Tanya Booker added 21. SCC was led by Connie Brazell with 25 points, Gail Brown with 13, and Angela Smith, who came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds. The Vanguards play their next game Dec. 10 at home versus Claremont-Scripps.
