Community College Basketball : Kelly Scores 16 in OCC Victory

Freshman forward Mike Kelly scored 16 points Thursday night to lead Orange Coast College to an 81-62 upset win over No. 8 Los Angeles Southwest in a first-round game of the Miles Eaton Classic in Orange Coast’s Peterson Gym.

Kelly, from Mater Dei High School, also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Pirate center Joe Seager added 10 points, 7 assists and 9 rebounds.

Orange Coast plays South Coast Conference rival Cerritos in a semifinal game tonight.

Cerritos 91, Mira Costa 57--Tom Tolbert, a 6-foot 9-inch transfer from UC Irvine, scored 20 points and had 6 rebounds to lead the Falcons to their fourth win in five games.

In Grossmount Tournament action:

Rancho Santiago College 82, Phoenix 79 (OT)--The Dons, led by Mark Moses’ 35 points, defeated the Bears (4-2) in overtime to improve their record to 4-0.

The Dons were leading, 71-69, but Phoenix’s Don Akre send the game into overtime with a late basket. Akre was the top scorer for the Bears with 24 points.

Rancho Santiago scored the first six points in overtime and was never challenged after that. Freshman Brent Martin added 19 points for the Dons.

Oxnard 81, Golden West 67--The Rustlers suffered their second loss in the tournament and were eliminated by the Condors.

Golden West led at halftime, 38-37 but consistently turned the ball over in the second half and trailed by as many as 17 points.

Bryon Strachan, a sophomore guard, led the Rustlers (1-2) with 25 points. Teammate Kevin Smith added 19 points.

In women’s community college action:

Fullerton College 82, Fresno City 56--Freshman center Sharon Lyon scored 19 points to lead the Hornets to a first-round win round in the College of the Sequoias Tournament. Stacey Rooney added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Fullerton, which will play Porterville in the second round.

Saddleback 93, West Los Angeles 54--Cheryl Eland scored 23 points and Connie Waikle added 20 points as the Gauchos (4-1) easily defeated West Los Angeles in a first-round game of the College of the Sequoias Tournament.

Mira Costa 58, Cypress 55--Brook Davis, who led all scorers with 25 points, made to late free throws to lead Mira Coast over the Chargers (2-2).
