Friday’s Prep Roundup : Antelope Valley and Canyon Reach Final

Antelope Valley High School upset visiting Hawthorne High School, 13-12, and Canyon Country Canyon High School defeated Lompoc High School, 30-6, at Lompoc Friday night to set up an all-Golden League final in the Northwestern Conference.

Canyon, which now has the longest winning streak in the State at 37, defeated Antelope Valley, 30-6, three weeks ago in the final game of the regular season.

Antelope Valley’s Peter Jensen kicked a 22-yard field goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game to bring the Antelopes from behind. Jensen had earlier kicked a 36-yard field goal.

Hawthorne threatened on the ensuing kickoff when it moved inside the Antelope Valley 20-yard line but fumbled.

Hawthorne had taken a 12-3 second-quarter lead on a five-yard pass from Alonzo Young to Tramelle Taylor and a two-yard run by Tyronne Rivers.

Antelope Valley’s only touchdown game on a 95-yard kickoff return by Shon Grimes after Hawthorne’s second touchdown.

Canyon’s junior quarterback, Ken Sollom, threw touchdown passes of 31, 38, 16 and 12 yards to four different receivers.

In the Big Five Conference semifinals, Long Beach Poly edged Marina, 7-6, at Cerritos College and Huntington Beach Edison defeated Westminster, 7-3, at Orange Coast College.

In the Inland Conference, Tehachapi upset No. 1-seeded Valley Christian, 14-0 at Valley Christian.

It was the first loss for Valley Christian (12-1), a team that has shut out 10 opponents this season.

Tehachapi (11-2) will play Montclair Prep, which defeated Paraclete, 31-8, at Paraclete.

Santa Ana (9-4), the No. 3 team in the Century League, defeated fourth-seeded Orange El Modena (11-2), 14-13, and will play the winner of tonight’s El Toro-Mission Viejo game at Orange Coast College in the final of the Southern Conference.

Claremont (12-1), the defending Eastern Conference champion, got an outstanding performance from Dan McGwire to defeat Norco (10-3), 38-13, at Ramona High.

McGwire completed 13 of 15 passes for 270 yards and 4 touchdowns--all to split receiver Travis Watkins, who finished with 194 yards on 9 catches.

Claremont will play Damien (9-4), which defeated defeated Ramona (9-4), in an all-Baseline League final. Claremont defeated Damien in league play, 21-0.
