Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Sonora Free Throws Edge La Serna

Linc Clifford hit two free throws with 15 seconds to play to lift Sonora High School to a 64-63 victory over La Serna Tuesday night in the first round of the Sonora Tournament.

Sonora had to survive a last-second miss from 12 feet by La Serna’s Robert Stone, who had a game-high 25 points. Stone’s shot went off the rim just before the buzzer.

Four players scored in double figures for the host Raiders. Mike Euins led Sonora with 19 points, Mike Peterson had 15, Grayle Humphrey had 11 and Clifford had 10.

Stone, a senior forward, hit 10 of 18 from the field and had 21 points in the first half.

Capistrano Valley 68, Canyon 60--Shawn Reed scored 23 points and Jason Trask added 18 to lead the Cougars to a first-round victory over the Comanches. Steve Ream paced Canyon with 18 points and Ralph Garcia had 17.

Katella 62, Magnolia 46--Richard Lucas scored 24 points and Bob Erbst had 19 as the Knights cruised to a first-round win at Sunny Hills. Mark Lyons led Magnolia with 18 points.

Newport Harbor 43, Sunny Hills 36--Despite making only 9 of 21 shots from the free-throw line, Newport Harbor was able to hold off Sunny Hills in a first-round game at Sunny Hills. John Alstrom paced the Sailors (1-0) with 8 points and 15 rebounds. Maurice Lee was Newport Harbor’s leading scorer with 10 points and West Torrell had 9. Phil Henderson led Sunny Hills (1-3) with 20 points.

SANTA ANA TOURNAMENT

Saddleback 57, Santa Ana Valley 52 (OT)--Bryant Walton hit four free throws in overtime to lift the Roadrunners to the victory and into Thursday night’s semifinal against Mission Viejo. Walton finished with a game-high 28 points.

Santa Ana Valley’s Mike Whitlock was fouled at the buzzer and made the second of two free throws with no time left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Whitlock led the Falcons with 20 points.

SANTA ANA VALLEY (52)--Janison 10, Ross 8, Whitlock 20, Alvarez 4, Phillips 6, Quinn 4.

Mission Viejo 56, Westminster 39--Tim Knox and Scott Pedersen combined for 31 points to lead the Diablos into Thursday night’s championship semifinals. Mission Viejo led, 28-15 at halftime. Tom Dever had 12 points and Mark Austin 10 for Westminster.

Ocean View 68, Banning 49--Ricky Butler scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Seahawks to their fourth straight win. Point guard Blaine DeBrouwer also had 18 points for Ocean View, and teammate Desi Hazley scored 13.
