Boys’ Prep Basketball : Brea-Olinda Routs Cold-Shooting La Habra

If nothing else, George Fairchild, La Habra basketball coach, proved that he’s one of the world’s greatest optimists.

Fairchild shouted, “Run your offense” to his team with 1:12 remaining in the first half Wednesday night in the opening round of the Sonora tournament. The Highlanders were trailing, 42-5, at the time and had showed little of anything resembling an offense.

It didn’t get much better as Brea-Olinda romped to a 73-30 victory to hand La Habra its third consecutive defeat. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, they were playing Brea at a very inopportune time.

The Wildcats were still smarting from a 19-point loss to Diamond Bar last week in their season opener. Brea, considered one of the top teams in Orange County, shot a forgettable 23% in the loss.

Of course, that shooting performance was magnificent when compared to La Habra’s first-half marksmanship. The Highlanders made only 2 of 30 shots and went nearly 13 minutes without scoring a field goal.

Brea shot 64% through three quarters before Wildcat Coach Gene Lloyd cleared his bench. Kevin Walker, the Wildcats’ 6-foot 10-inch center, led all scorers with 23 points, and guard Vincent Francis added 12 points.

“Our intensity improved immeasurably tonight compared to the Diamond Bar game,” Lloyd said. “There was improvement in our shot selection, and we played good defense. Overall, we did a lot better job.”

The Wildcats made 8 of their opening 11 shots and held a 17-2 lead midway through the first quarter. La Habra failed to reach double figures at halftime, and guard Warren Grutbo’s free throw represented the Highlanders’ entire offense in the second quarter.

The Highlanders went 12:49 without scoring from the field until Tony Sciacca made a jump shot in the third quarter. Sciacca led the Highlanders with seven points.
