Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Eisenhower Defeats Brea-Olinda Despite Walker’s 37 Points, 72-69

Four Eisenhower High School players scored in double figures Thursday night to offset a record-setting performance by Brea-Olinda’s Kevin Walker, as the Eagles edged the Wildcats, 72-69, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Sonora-Sunny Hills Tournament at Sonora High School.

Walker, a 6-foot 10-inch senior center headed for UCLA next season, scored 37 points to break the tournament record of 35, set by Sonora’s Jon Samuelson against Bolsa Grande in 1981. Walker had 25 points in the second half but was shut out in overtime.

Ron Thomas scored all four of Brea’s overtime points, but Tracy Lindsey scored six to lead Eisenhower. Lindsey and Alex Green led Eisenhower with 19 points, while Tony Lewis had 16 and Jon Argentine had 10 for the Eagles. Eisenhower will play Capistrano Valley in a semifinal game tonight.

Capistrano Valley 81, Sonora 46--The Cougars got 20 points from Shawn Reed and 18 points from Nathan Call in a quarterfinal game at Sonora. Ronnell Balagot added 12 points and Jason Trask had 10 points for Capistrano Valley. For Sonora, Grayle Humphries scored 15 and Mike Euins added 11.

Hacienda Heights Wilson 70, Orange 41--The Panthers stayed with the Wildcats for the first period with a 10-9 lead, but Hacienda Heights Wilson blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Orange, 25-8. Wilson was led by 6-10 center Scott Williams, who scored 16 points, while Dave Roth led Orange with 12 points.

Katella 58, Newport Harbor 36--Forwards Bob Erbst and Richard Lucas combined to score 32 points to lead the Knights into the championship semifinals. Katella will meet Hacienda Heights Wilson at 8 tonight at Sunny Hills, with the winner advancing to the tournament’s championship game.

La Habra was led by Nelson Bergamo, who scored 13 points.

Ralph Garcia and Steve Ream each scored 12 points for Canyon, which will meet Woodbridge in a fifth-place semifinal game today. La Serna’s Robert Stone led all scorers with 21 points.

Shawn Patchell added 18 points and Scott Tamura had 14 points, while Mike Moceri had 9 assists and Mike Herring grabbed 14 rebounds for Irvine (2-1). Savanna’s Mike Campbell led all scorers with 21 points and Jae Koh added 12.

Lyons also had 12 rebounds, while Mike Goff added 11 points for Magnolia (2-2), which will play Irvine in today’s fifth-place semifinals.

El Dorado 74, Millikan 70--The Golden Hawks, behind Jim Sammon’s 35-point performance, outscored the Rams, 20-10, in the fourth period to pull out the come-from-behind victory in a semifinal game played at Fountain Valley High. Sammon scored 11 points in the final quarter to help El Dorado advance to tonight’s championship game against St. Anthony. Dan Bailey added 14 points and Rob Hanna had 11 for the Hawks.

Edison 71, Canyon (Saugus) 48--Junior guard Michael Prince scored 21 points and passed off for 6 assists as the Chargers (1-1) coasted to a first-round victory at Cabrillo High School. Senior forward Dan Hanan added 10 points and 7 rebounds for Edison. The Chargers meet Cabrillo, a 62-56 winner over Dos Pueblos, tonight at 8:30 in a semifinal game.

Chris Yoxtheimer was the high scorer for Cypress with 13 points, while Bond Weaver scored 12. El Toro meets Foothill in one semifinal tonight at 6:15 and San Clemente plays Fontana, a 52-48 winner over Long Beach Wilson Thursday night, in the other semifinal at 7:45.

Steve Gyld grabbed 18 rebounds and scored 11 points, while Matt Hattabaugh had 12 rebounds and 7 assists for Marina (2-1). William Quinn led the Vikings with 20 points. The Vikings meet Santa Barbara tonight in a semifinal game.
