Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Stuart Thomas Scores 27 to Lead No. 2 Mater Dei Over St. Bernard

Forward Stuart Thomas scored 27 points Friday night to lead No. 2 Mater Dei High School to its 35th straight victory, a 61-58 nonleague win over No. 3 St. Bernard at Loyola-Marymount.

Thomas, a 6-foot 9-inch senior, made 10 of 15 attempts from the floor. Leron Ellis added 20 points for the Monarchs (5-0), who never led by more than eight points.

David Whitmore scored 23 to lead the Vikings.

Garden Grove’s Jeff Kanegae, who hit 6 of 7 from the field and had 13 points, broke a 53-53 tie when he scored a three-point play with 20 seconds remaining. Anaheim’s Ernest Johnson then went the distance for an uncontested layup at the buzzer for the final margin.

San Gorgonio 76, Kennedy 75--Mark Chumley made his only field goal of the game with 5 seconds remaining and then tacked on a free throw to lift San Gorgonio past the Fighting Irish (2-4). Kennedy hurt itself at the free throw line. The Irish hit 64 percent of their shots from the floor but only made 18 of 33 from the line. They missed the front end of 5 1-and-1 opportunities in the fourth quarter.
