San Diego Boys’ Basketball : Depleted Christian Wins With Defense

Christian High School, down to eight players after two were sidelined by the flu, extended its record to 5-1 Tuesday with a 78-37 win over visiting Southwest in a non-league boys’ basketball game.

The Patriots led, 20-8, after one quarter and 43-17 at halftime. Christian’s lead continued to mount in the second half against winless Southwest (0-5).

“I think we did a good job with pressure on defense,” Christian Coach Randy Wright said. “We switched defenses, and the kids reacted real well. We just played well as a team.”

Guard Steve Grant led the Patriots with 26 points. Center Darryl White added 19 points and 8 rebounds. Jon Okken, Christian’s point guard, had 11 assists.

In other non-league action:

Serra 55, Kearny 51 (OT)--Steve Smith and Deven Moran scored baskets in overtime as the Conquistadors (6-1) edged Kearny at Serra. The score was tied 51-51 at the end of regulation play. Anthony Moore led Serra with 19 points; Smith added 18. Kearny’s Tim Garlin led all players with 20 points.

Point Loma 50, Hoover 45--Richard Clark scored 17 points as Point Loma rallied to defeat Hoover for the second time in eight days. The Pointers (3-5) beat Hoover, 55-51, last week in the Hilltop Invitational Tournament. Point Loma trailed the host Cardinals, 36-33, after three quarters Tuesday, but outscored them 17-9 in the final period. Ken Dunaway scored 14 points, and Dale Bryant added 10 for the Pointers. Michael Walker and Ken Matthews each scored 10 for the Cardinals, who are 4-3.

Crawford 41, Mission Bay 37--Dondi Bell, Crawford’s 6-8 center, scored 14 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the Colts’ win at Mission Bay (0-3). Crawford (3-0) led, 17-14, at halftime, and extended its margin to 29-23 going into the fourth quarter. Tony Richards led Mission Bay with 12 points.

St. Augustine 74, Army-Navy 52--Four players scored in double figures as the Saints evened their record at 4-4. Joe Shandley led the way with 20, followed by Charley Applegate (18), Doug Carter (15) and Tony Evenson (12). St. Augustine took a 14-6 lead after one quarter and was never threatened.

In the Grossmont League:

Helix 53, Monte Vista 47--Helix, playing at Monte Vista, trailed, 29-25, at halftime, but caught up and went ahead early in the third quarter. Monte Vista had a chance to cut the margin to two points with 40 seconds to play but missed a layup. Helix, 2-0 in league play, was led by Eric Mobley with 21 points. Melvin McFarlan scored 20 for Monte Vista (2-1, 3-3).

Mt. Miguel 58, Valhalla 45--Mike Flores and La Von Reese scored 11 points each and Marcus Edge added 10 as Mt. Miguel improved its league record to 2-1 and overall mark to 3-3. The score was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, but the Matadors took control in the second period by outscoring the Norsemen, 15-6. Charlie Foley and Troy Toolson each scored 10 for Valhalla, which dropped to 0-3 in the league.
