Defending champion El Dorado High School advanced to the semifinals of the Brea-Olinda Basketball Tournament with a 76-61 victory against Fullerton Saturday.

The Golden Hawks appeared to be in peak form as they improved their record to 10-1. They will face Woodbridge (9-2) at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

El Dorado’s Jim Sammon had another one of his average games--27 points, divided about equally between layups off the fast break and his high-arching jump shots.

“We expected a tough game. We knew they were no slouches,” Sammon said, recalling the Golden Hawks’ eight-point win against the Indians at the Garden Grove Tournament earlier this month.

“We knew they would try to slow the tempo down to keep it close,” he said. “But we try to run any time we can. We try to force the issue.”

The Golden Hawks accomplished that goal. They led by as many as 25 points, 59-34, after Fullerton managed only two points in the third quarter.

The Indians (6-4) attempted reasonable shots, but nothing seemed to go in. They made just 24 of 74 shots (32%) in the game.

“We tell the kids that there will be nights they won’t shoot well and the defense will have to keep us in the game,” Indian Coach Randy Forgette said.

“(But defense) was nonexistent,” he said. “It was really disappointing. We’ve got to regroup and come back.”
