Mary Gainey, a freshman guard from Mater Dei High School, made two free throws with eight seconds remaining Saturday night to lead the Chapman College women’s basketball team to a 57-56 win over the University of Northern Arizona in the third-place game of the Sourdough Tournament at the University of San Francisco.

Gainey’s foul shots in the one-and-one situation gave the Panthers a 57-54 lead. The Lumberjacks scored with three seconds to go, but it was a meaningless basket.

Chapman (9-4) trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half but came back behind the play of All-America forward Leone Patterson, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Gainey, who added 13 points, and Karen Hirsch, who had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
