PCAA Roundup : Kuipers’ Shot Gives Fresno a 49-48 Win Over Pacific

Jos Kuipers hit an 18-foot jumper with 19 seconds left Saturday night to give Fresno State a 49-48 victory over University of the Pacific in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Fresno.

The Bulldogs are 1-0 in the PCAA, the Tigers 1-1.

Kuipers led the Bulldogs with 12 points, followed by Leo Walker with 10.

The Bulldogs trailed 21-12 midway through the first half, and pulled to a 27-27 tie by halftime.

The Tigers were led by Christian Gray with 15 points and Rich Anema with 14 and 8 rebounds.

Nevada Las Vegas 106, San Jose St. 80--Junior guard Freddie Banks scored 29 points to lead the 13th-ranked Runnin’ Rebels to victory at Las Vegas.

The win was the 300th for Jerry Tarkanian since he became Las Vegas’ coach in 1973. His record as the Rebel coach is 300-78.

Banks made 10 of his 16 field-goal attempts, four of which were three-pointers, as the Rebels raised their PCAA record to 2-0 and their overall mark to 13-2.

Forward Anthony Jones added 25 points for Las Vegas and had a game-high six assists. Armon Gilliam, the Rebels’ other starting forward, had 20 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore forward Ricky Berry led San Jose State (7-4, 0-2) with 32 points and eight rebounds.

New Mexico State 80, UC Santa Barbara 63--Gilbert Wilburn scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead New Mexico State to its win at Santa Barbara.

Jeff Williams added 15 points and had a game-high seven assists for the Aggies, who raised their PCAA record to 2-0 and their overall mark to 8-3. Virgil Harris contributed 14 points while playing only 10 minutes for the winners.

Conner Henry paced Santa Barbara with 12 points. Khris Fortson added 11 points for the Gauchos. Scott Fisher, the Gauchos’ leading scorer, was held to one field goal and only nine points while playing 31 minutes.

UCSB led by as many as seven points in the first half, but New Mexico State outscored the Gauchos, 33-12, during a stretch of nearly 12 minutes starting late in the first half to turn a 30-29 lead into a 63-41 advantage.
