Community College Basketball : Cypress Defeats OCC in Overtime, 72-69

The Cypress College basketball team beat Orange Coast, 72-69, as guard Jeff Martineau made two free throws at the end of overtime to fend off the Pirates in a South Coast Conference game Monday night at Cypress.

The Chargers (1-1, 11-5) also were helped by Scott Swanner, who made six straight free throws earlier in overtime. Martineau led Cypress with 16 points and Swanner finished with 14.

For the Pirates (1-1, 7-7), guard Jon Johnston scored 20 points and 6-foot 10-inch center Joe Seager had 17 before fouling out with 4:30 left in regulation. Cypress plays its next conference game at Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Compton 86, Golden West 74--The Tartars (2-0, 10-5) handed the Rustlers their 18th straight conference loss as 6-7 center Andre Wiley scored 30 points. The Rustlers (0-2, 4-9) shot 37% from the field. Golden West guard Bryon Strachan scored 27 points and forward J.T. Debbs had 17. Golden West travels to Mt. San Antonio College Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Mt. San Antonio 63, Saddleback 57--The Mounties (2-0, 12-3) shot 74% in the second half to defeat the Gauchos (0-2, 5-8) at Saddleback. Mt. SAC guard Efrem Leonard led all scorers with 17 points. The Gauchos’ James Taylor scored 16 points and Mike Minier and Tom Desiano had 10 points each. Desiano also had 10 assists. Saddleback plays at Cerritos Wednesday.
