Girls’ Roundup : Foothill Beats Orange to Remain Unbeaten in the Century League

The Foothill High School girl’s basketball team keeps rolling along, posting a 58-48 victory over Orange in Century League play at Foothill Thursday.

The victory improved the Knights’ league record to 2-0 and overall mark to 12-1.

Chris McFerson and Stephanie Fleischaker led the Knights with 14 points apiece.

Debbie Kerr led the Panthers with 12 points. Orange saw its record fall to 1-1 and 7-6.

In other Century League action:

Canyon 57, Santa Ana 25--Angie Nelson scored 14 points to lead the Comanches to the easy win at Canyon. The Comanches (1-1 and 6-3) are at Tustin Tuesday.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 72, Pius X 25--The Monarchs rushed out to a 34-10 halftime lead and were never headed. Noelle Manfre led the Monarchs with 18 points and Geri Gainey and Kim Ellerman added 15 and 10 points, respectively. Lisa Hickman scored 10 points for Pius X. Mater Dei is 2-0 and 12-5. The Monarchs are at Millikan Saturday.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 63, El Dorado 52--Center Karin Davidson scored 31 points to lead the Aztecs (4-0, 11-3) past the Golden Hawks at El Dorado. The game was tied at 38-38 with 4:50 left in third quarter before Esperanza ran off a 10-3 streak to take 48-41 lead. Sharon Warmus added 18 for the Aztecs. Jill Matyuch scored 24 to lead El Dorado (3-1, 8-2) and Cathy Newvine added 20.

Cypress 51, Pacifica 30--Liz Crosdale led the Centurions with 12 points at Cypress. The Centurions (2-2 and 8-6) are at El Dorado Tuesday.

Katella 62, Loara 44--Julie Standering led the Knights with 15 points at Loara. Heidi Sorour scored 10 for Loara. Katella (3-1 and 10-1) is at Esperanza Tuesday.

Los Alamitos 55, Kennedy 46--The Griffins defeated the Fighting Irish (0-4) at Kennedy.

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 51, Bolsa Grande 42--Maggie Tuia and Sandy Gorgas each scored 13 points to lead the Lobos to the win at Los Amigos. Kelly Grant added 10 points for the Lobos. Los Amigos (1-0, 4-4) is at Santiago Tuesday.

In the Olympic League:

Southern California Christian 40, Maranatha Christian 37--Tara Cross scored 24 points to lead the Flames to the victory at Maranatha. Kristin Hauge added 14 points for SCC. The Flames improved their records to 1-1 and 1-3.

Orange Lutheran 38, Capistrano Valley Christian 33--Suzanne Bragg scored 16 points to lead the Lancers to the win at Lutheran. Michelle Tuttle scored 12 points for the Eagles. Orange Lutheran is 1-1 and 5-4. Capistrano Valley Christian is 0-2 and 4-3.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 45, Saddleback 34--Gilly Powell paced the Warriors with 13 points and 11 rebounds at Woodbridge. Jill Daniels added 9 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors. Shawna Sepulveda led the Roadrunners with 12 points. Woodbridge improved its league record to 3-0 while Saddleback fell to 2-1. Woodbridge is at Costa Mesa Tuesday.

Corona del Mar 60, Estancia 34--K.C. Jones scored 28 points and had 6 assists to lead the Sea Kings to the win at Estancia. Anne Foley scored 8 points for Estancia. Corona del Mar (3-0 and 6-7) plays host to University Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 54, University 39--Chantel Deford scored 16 points and Lara Asper added 10 points, 20 rebounds and 8 blocked shots as the Sailors (1-8, 1-2) won their first game of the year. Sarah Andrus was also in double figures for Newport Harbor with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Costa Mesa 51, Laguna Beach 49--The Artists rebounded a missed free throw with nine seconds left but couldn’t score on a final shot at Laguna Beach. Carol Long and Stephanie Swanson scored 12 each to lead the Mustangs (2-1, 7-6). Laguna Beach is 0-3, 2-6.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 51, San Clemente 28--The Cougars had no trouble disposing of the Tritons at San Clemente. Lynne Kristoffersen scored 14 points for the Tritons. Capistrano Valley improved its record to 1-1 in league while San Clemente fell to 0-2. San Clemente is at Irvine Tuesday.

El Toro 52, Irvine 39--Brigid Moynihan scored 15 points and sisters Karen and Kathy Nickel added 14 and 11 points, respectively, as El Toro (9-5, 2-0) beat Irvine (7-6, 1-1) in South Coast League play at Irvine. For Irvine, Shelly Moceri had 11 points and Cindy Edwards added 8 points and 7 rebounds.

In nonleague action:

Brea-Olinda 76, Lakewood 44--Charlene Schuessler led the Wildcats with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, all coming in three quarters of play at Lakewood. Carrie Egan added 19 points and Susan Tousey, a 6-foot 2-inch, sophomore center, had 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats were most recently ranked 18th in the country by USA Today and No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section 3-A division. Brea (11-2) plays host to Garden Grove Saturday.

Fullerton 89, Magnolia 68--Junior forward Vicki Silva had 34 points, 13 rebounds, 7 steals and 6 assists to lead the Indians (9-4) past the Sentinels at Fullerton. Guard Heidi Shikuma added 23 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Magnolia (8-5) was led by Michelle Carter, who scored a game-high 43 points.

Bellflower 55, Buena Park 27--Maria Thompson led the Buccaneers to the win at Buena Park with 17 points.
