Girls’ Roundup : Magnolia’s Carter Scores 55 in Rout of Anaheim

Senior center Michelle Carter scored a career-high 55 points and had 30 rebounds Tuesday to lead Magnolia High School to a 108-25 win over Anaheim in the Orange League basketball opener for both teams. It was the fourth time in two years that Carter has scored more than 50 points in a game. She was 19 of 30 from the field and 17 for 25 from the free-throw line.

Sophomore forward Dawne Borum added 35 points and 20 rebounds for Magnolia (9-5.) Rena Rossoll added 13 rebounds and 7 assists for the Sentinels.

Anaheim is 0-12 overall.

In other Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 70, Valencia 48--The Wildcats (1-0, 13-2) won behind 19 points and 13 rebounds from junior Christen McPhee. Center Susan Tousey scored 13 points and added 6 rebounds for Brea-Olinda.

Savanna 51, Western 38--Najla Koury scored 14 points to lead the Rebles to a win over the Pioneers at Savanna. Two other Rebels, Venetta Dorlis (10 points) and Tammy Burns (12 points) scored in double figures. Savanna is 1-0 in league and 8-8 overall.

In Sea View League action:

Woodbridge 49, Costa Mesa 45--Senior forward Jill Daniels grabbed a school record 23 rebounds in helping the Warriors to a win at Costa Mesa. Daniels also scored 10 points as the Warriors advanced to 4-0 in league and 10-5 overall. Senior forward Gilly Powell was the leading scorer for Woodbridge with 22 points.

The Mustangs, who were out rebounded 64-37, fell to 2-2 and 7-7 overall.

Corona del Mar 52, University 35--Senior Michelle Willard scored 23 points and had 21 rebounds to lead the Seakings past the Trojans at Corona del Mar.

Estancia 52, Newport Harbor 46--The Eagles (2-2, 8-4) got 12 points each from Shawna Newbern and Brenda Jaeger in their win over the Sailors at Estancia. Newport Harbor is 1-4 in league and 1-9 overall.

In Century League action:

Foothill 56, Villa Park 32--Senior forward Stephanie Fleischaker scored 14 points, and Chris McFerson added 13 points and blocked 7 shots to lead the Knights past the Spartans at Villa Park. Foothill outscored the Spartans, 22-2, in the fourth quarter to pull away. Becky Sullivan scored 10 points for Foothill (3-0, 13-1); Felice Geddy had 6 assists and 6 steals for the Knights. Villa Park dropped to 2-1 in league and 8-4 overall.

Santa Ana Valley 49, Santa Ana 26--The Falcons won their first league game with a victory over the Saints at Santa Ana Valley. Senior forward Soloi Tivata scored 14 points for the Falcons (1-2, 6-4.) Tamiko Bell and Cathy Smith each added 10. Senior center Tammy Bethune was the leding rebounder with 16 for Santa Ana Valley.

In Garden Grove League action:

Bolsa Grande 42, Santiago 26--Roseann Flories scored 14 points and added 8 assists, and junior guard Doreen Day added 14 points to lead the Matadors to their first league win. Bolsa Grange is 1-1 in league and 4-7 overall.

Los Amigo 37, Rancho Alamitos 28--Senior guard Kelly Grand scored 11 points to lead the Lobos to their second league win at Rancho Alamitos.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 62, Buena Park 42--Junior forward Vicky Silva scored 28 points after not playing in the first quarter. Junior Hida Shikuma added 15 points for the Indians (1-0, 10-4.)

La Habra 58, Sunny Hills 40--The Highlanders were led by Robin Seabrook’s 14 points

In Olympic League action:

Valley Christian 74, Orange Luthern 41--Junior forward Donna Pollema scored 32 points and teammate Kari Parriott added 24 to lead the Crusadors (3-0, 12-2) to victory at Orange Luthern. Michelle Bolz scored 14 points for Orange Luthern, which fell to 1-3 in league and 5-6 overall.

Whittier Christian 58, Southern California Christian 33--Junior center Cindy Vyskocily scored 34 points to lead Whittier Christian (4-0, 8-2.)

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 74, Cypress 54--Forward senior Jill Matyuch scored 31 points, and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks (4-1, 9-2) past the Centurions at Cypress. Julie Cooper added 18 for El Dorado. Cypress is 2-3 in league and 8-7 overall.

Esperanza 44, Katella 37--Two Aztecs scored 17 points, senior Sharon Warmus and sophomore Karin Davidson, as Esperanza won for the fifth time against no losses in league. Davidson scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half. The Aztecs are 12-3 overall. Kelly Johnson was the leading scorer for the Knights (3-2, 8-3) with 12 points.

Loara 39, Kennedy 32--Freshman Heidi Sorour scored 14 points and Carolyn Osato added 10 as the Saxons beat the Fighting Irish at Kennedy.

Ursala Lovely led Kennedy with 12 points. Loara improved its record to 2-3 in the league; Kennedy is 0-5.

In Sunset League action:

Ocean View 57, Edison 49--Seahawk center Trena Vlachos scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Ocean View past the Chargers at Ocean View. Danna Douty scored 10 points and had 5 assists for the Seahawks. Denise Ogburn added 16 points and Dalene Lawson 10. Senior Shelly Straight pulled down 17 rebounds for the Seahawks (1-1, 13-3.) Fountain Valley 71, Marina 62--The Barons overcame a two-point Viking lead with close to six minutes to play to go on to defeat Marina. Junior Melissa Haneley scored 27 points for the Barons (15-3, 2-0.) Marina is 0-2 in league and 10-6 overall.

In Angelus League Action:

Mater Dei 60, Bishop Montgomery 47-- Senior guard Noelle Manfree scored 17 points to lead the Monarchs. Junior guard Julie Porter scored 22 points for Bishop Montgomery.

In South Coast League Action:

Irvine 60, San Clemente 21-Cindy Edwards scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and teammate Shelly Moceri added 10 points for the Vaqueros. Irvine is 8-6, 2-1.
