ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : South Coast League : Dana Hills Outmuscled by El Toro

Bret Johnson scored 26 points that led a second-half surge as El Toro High School outmuscled Dana Hills, 66-50, Wednesday night at El Toro.

The Chargers opened a six-point lead at the first-half buzzer when Johnson, a sophomore guard, hit a jumper from the baseline to give El Toro a 22-16 halftime lead. The Dolphins’ had trouble scoring in the first half, shooting 6 for 18 from the floor. The Chargers were 10 of 16.

El Toro (9-7, 3-1) used a tough defense to shut down the Dolphins’ leading scorer, Dave Lyon, who was averaging more than 13 points per game. Lyon scored eight Wednesday.

The Chargers broke the game open late in the third quarter when sophomore forward Eric Speaker hit five straight points to give El Toro an 11-point lead.

Jim Hargy scored on a behind-the-back pass from Johnson with 3:48 left for a layup to jump to a 58-42 lead.

“Bret Johnson had a fine night,” said Tim Travers, El Toro coach. “Don’t forget Jeff Stone, our other guard. They put it together as our backcourt men.”

The Dolphins (6-7, 0-3) were led by Pat Loyd’s 14 points.

Capistrano Valley 80, Irvine 74--Jason Trask scored a game-high 22 points and teammate Shawn Reed added 19 points to lead the Cougars (4-0). Jimmy Raye (15), Mike Herring (15) and Shawn Patchell (14) were high scorers for Irvine (2-2).

Mission Viejo 88, Laguna Hills 44--The Diablos outscored the Hawks, 30-6, in the first quarter en route to an easy win at home. Center Tim Knowles, who had eight points in the first period, led the Diablos (3-0, 13-4) with 21 points. Jeff Herdman had 10 points in the first quarter and ended the game with 18. Eleven of the 12 Mission Viejo players scored. Laguna Hills is 0-3 in league and 3-10 overall.

In nonleague action:

Trabuco Hills 59, Parker 38--The host Mustangs, leading 29--21 going into the final period, put the game out of reach with 30 fourth quarter points to improve their record to 9--10 in an afternoon contest Wednesday.
