With five of its six teams ranked in The Times’ Top 10, it would be difficult to find a stronger or more balanced league in San Diego than the City Eastern League. And if Friday night’s league opener between Madison and Mira Mesa is any indication, those clubs are in for a wild race that figures to go down to the wire.

Mira Mesa, The Times’ No. 5 team, defeated No. 8 Madison, 61-60, in overtime in front of a near capacity crowd at Madison.

David Lee provided the winning margin when he sank two free throws with five seconds left in overtime to give the Marauders (1-0, 11-4) a 61-58 lead. Madison’s Tony Blount scored a layup at the buzzer to bring the score to its final count.

Bill Lee led Mira Mesa with 18 points and Scott Cummings scored 10.

Madison’s Jimmie Dean scored a game-high 21. He also hit a 15-footer with 10 seconds left in regulation play to tie the game at 53 and send it into overtime. Eric Jackson added 11 and Blount finished with 10.

Madison trailed, 59-58, and had the ball with 30 seconds left in overtime when the ball was stolen from Dean. The Warhawks then were forced to foul. It turned out David Lee was the wrong player to pick on.
