Smith, McKenzie Lead Loyola to 66-54 Victory Over Gonzaga
Seniors Keith Smith and Forrest McKenzie scored 24 and 22 points, respectively, to lead Loyola Marymount to a 66-54 victory over Gonzaga Saturday night in a West Coast Athletic Conference basketball game.
Loyola raised its record to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the WCAC. Gonzaga fell to 7-8 and 0-2.
Smith scored 15 points in the first half, and the Lions outscored Gonzaga, 21-8, during the last 13 minutes to take a 35-22 halftime lead.
Gonzaga got within eight points in the second half, but McKenzie killed the Bulldog rally with three jump shots that put Loyola ahead, 45-33.
Loyola made 20 of 28 free throws, while Gonzaga made 6 of 11.
Junior forward Mike Champion and senior guard Jeff Condill paced Gonzaga with 10 points apiece. Enoch Simmons had 10 for the Lions.
