San Diego Prep Basketball : El Capitan Streaks to Win, 73-52

The El Capitan High School boys’ basketball team ran off 17 straight points in the fourth quarter en route to a 73-52 win over Monte Vista in a key Grossmont League game Tuesday at Monte Vista.

The El Capitan surge broke open what had been a close game. El Capitan led, 48-40, entering the fourth quarter. The win moved the Vaqueros (7-1, 11-3) into a first-place tie with Mount Miguel, which was idle. Monte Vista dropped to 5-3, 6-8.

Aaron Johnson led El Capitan with 28 points, Steve Burroughs added 21 and Matt Schmidt had 10. Melvin McFarlin had 15 points for Monte Vista and Chris Marshall had 11.

In other Grossmont League action:

Valhalla 56, El Cajon 44--Valhalla guard Troy Toolson scored 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the Norsemen (2-6, 6-9) to the win at the old Grossmont High gym. Toolson made 8 of 12 shots from the field. Valhalla sophomores Dan Chase and Robert Tubman added 12 points apiece. Tubman also had nine rebounds.

“Our 3-2 zone stopped them early,” Valhalla Coach John Gillilan said. “They tried to get inside and couldn’t. They had to take 18-foot jump shots.”

Valhalla led, 12-4, after one quarter and took a 44-27 lead into the final period. El Cajon dropped to 2-6, 5-11.

Grossmont 63, Santana 46--Grossmont used full-court man-to-man, pressure to jump out to a 34-20 halftime lead en route to the win at home. Darryl Ransom led Grossmont (6-2, 9-3) with 18 points, Jason Foggiano had 12 points and Donnie Angotti added 11. Santana (2-6, 4-11) was led by Tim Barry with 10 points.

Helix 71, Granite Hills 58--Eric Mobley scored 33 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead Helix (4-4, 6-8) to the win at home. Helix led, 15-8, after one quarter and slowly increased its lead throughout. Granite Hills dropped to 1-7, 1-14.
