Orange County Girls’ Basketball : Brea Warms Up for Muir Game With 78-44 Victory Over Savanna

The Brea-Olinda High School girls’ basketball team warmed up for an important nonleague challenge by downing Savanna, 78-44, in Orange League play at Brea Thursday.

Saturday night, the Wildcats play host to Pasadena’s Muir High, which is ranked second in the nation by USA Today, first in the CIF Southern Section 4-A division and first in Los Angeles County.

Thursday, the Wildcats took a 53-13 halftime lead over the Rebels before coasting. Carrie Egan scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Charlene Schuessler scored 16 points and had 11 assists to lead the Wildcats (16-2).

The two teams that beat Brea--Christ the King of New York and Pt. Loma--were both beaten this season by Muir (18-0). Muir’s victory over Point Loma ended that school’s 63-game winning streak.

Savanna’s record in league play fell to 2-2.

In other Orange League action:

Magnolia 80, Valencia 51--Michelle Carter had 40 points, 19 rebounds, 6 blocks and 5 assists to lead the Sentinels to the win at Magnolia. Carter hit 18 of 26 free throws and 11 of 19 field-goal attempts. Dee Borum and Rena Rossoll scored 14 points apiece for the Tigers. Magnolia raised its record to 4-0 and 12-5. Valencia fell to 1-3 and 10-7. Magnolia is at Brea-Olinda Tuesday.

In the Sea View League:

Costa Mesa 77, Newport Harbor 29--Valerie Palmer scored a career-high 18 points and Suzanne Cowley added 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to the win at Costa Mesa. Chantel Deford led the Sailors with 13 points. Costa Mesa raised its record 4-3 and 9-8. Newport fell to 1-6 and 1-10.

Corona del Mar 57, Saddleback 35--K.C. Jones scored 23 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 8 assists to lead the Sea Kings at Corona del Mar. Michelle Willard added 12 points and 21 rebounds to lead the winners. Monica Walton scored 19 to lead Saddleback. Corona del Mar raised its league record to 7-0. Saddleback fell to 5-2.

Woodbridge 43, Estancia 35--The Warriors raised their record to 6-1 and 12-6 with the win at Estancia. The Eagles fell to 2-5 and 4-11.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 74, Kennedy 42--It was just another night for the Golden Hawks’ Jill Matyuch, who had 30 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 8 steals to lead the win at El Dorado. Ursula Lovely scored 18 points for Kennedy. El Dorado is 6-2 and 11-3. Kennedy fell to 1-7 and 2-12. El Dorado plays host to Katella Tuesday.

Los Alamitos 59, Loara 38--Jeanette Dorsey scored 18 points to lead the Griffins to the win at Loara. Carolyn Osato scored 17 points for the losers. Los Alamitos (7-1) plays host to league-leading Esperanza Tuesday. Loara fell to 2-6.

Esperanza 45, Cypress 42--Sharon Warmus scored 20 points and Karin Davidson added 16 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Aztecs to the win at Cypress. Laura Marmitt scored 12 points for the Centurions. Esperanza (8-0, 15-3), travels to Los Alamitos Tuesday in a showdown of first- and second-place teams in the league. Cypress’ record fell to 3-5 and 9-9.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 56, Huntington Beach 25--Jackie Cook and Kerri Clower scored 14 points apiece to lead the Barons to the win at Fountain Valley. Tammy Keller scored 10 points for the Oilers. Fountain Valley is 4-0 and 18-4. Huntington Beach fell to 1-4 and 9-11. The Barons are at Ocean View Saturday.

Marina 56, Edison 51--Temre Kuester had 8 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to lead the host Vikings to the win in a battle of third-place teams. Marina (2-3 in league, 12-7 overall) was led by Kathy Stuppy’s 16 points and 9 rebounds. Heather Kirkup added 12 points and 6 assists. Michelle Hennessey had 14 points for Edison (2-3, 14-6).

Westminster 54, Ocean View 52 (OT)--Jeanine Battaglia had 20 points, including 2 of 3 from the free-throw line in overtime, to lead Westminster (2-3 in league) to victory at Ocean View. Devon Haita added 16 for the winners. Ocean View rallied from 19 points down in the third quarter. The Seahawks (3-2, 13-7) had 24 points and 17 rebounds from Trina Vlachos and 10 points and 16 rebounds from Shelly Straight.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 42, Troy 24--Robin Seabrook scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds to lead the Highlanders to the win at La Habra. Jennifer McCartney and Susan Guest each scored 8 points apiece for the Warriors. La Habra raised its record to 4-0 and 15-4. Troy fell to 1-3 in league.

Fullerton 66, Sunny Hills 42--Vickey Silva scored 22 points to lead the Indians to the win at Fullerton. Catherine Stedman scored 18 for the Lancers. Fullerton raised its record to 3-1. Sunny Hills fell to 1-3.

In the Century League:

Foothill 57, Tustin 40--Chris McFerson scored 26 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, blocked 5 shots, and had 4 steals to lead the Knights at Tustin. Susan Homer and Doneisa Anderson scored 12 points apiece for the Tillers. Foothill is 7-0 and 17-1. Tustin fell to 6-1 and 10-6.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 70, Irvine 37--The Vaqueros’ Shelly Moceri led all scorers with 20 points but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Diablos at Irvine. Mission Viejo raised its league record to 5-1. The Vaqueros fell to 4-2.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 44, Garden Grove 33--Dorreen Day scored 14 points to lead the Matadors to the win at Bolsa Grande. The Matadors raised their league record to 3-2. The Argonauts’ record fell to 3-2.

In the Orange League:

Western 72, Anaheim 36--Melanie Williams scored 27 points to lead the Pioneers at Western. Tammy Bartley and Lisa Pool scored 9 points apiece for the Colonists.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 55, San Clemente 30--Andrea Young led the Chargers with 15 points at El Toro. Lynn Kristofferson scored 13 for San Clemente. El Toro raised its league record to 6-0. San Clemente fell to 0-6.

In the Olympic League:

Bretheren 68, Orange Lutheran 40--Michelle Mitchell scored 21 points to lead the Warriors to the win. Brethren raised its record to 5-2 and 11-4. Lutheran fell to 3-5 and 7-8.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 59, Bishop Amat 35--Geri Gainey scored 16 points and Kim Ellerman added 15 to lead the Monarchs to the win at Bishop Amat. Mater Dei (5-0 and 15-6) is at Edison in a nonleague game Saturday.
