ORANGE COUNTY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : Brea-Olinda Has Magnolia’s Number in 102-40 Victory

The Brea-Olinda High School girls’ basketball team broke the 100-point barrier for the first time in Mark Trakh’s six years as the Wildcats’ coach Tuesday night by defeating Magnolia, 102-40, in an Orange League game played at Brea-Olinda High.

Susan Tousey, a 6-foot, 2-inch sophomore center, scored 24 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 6 shots in three quarters to help the Wildcats improve to 6-0 in league and 17-3 overall. Kristen McPhee added 20 points in three quarters and did an excellent job defensively against the Sentinels’ high-scoring forward, Michelle Carter.

Carter, who had been averaging 32 points a game, managed only three points in the first three quarters, when McPhee was covering her in a box-and-one defense. McPhee sat out the fourth quarter, in which Carter scored 9 points to finish the game with 12.

In other Orange League action:

Valencia 71, Western 65--Kimari Kubota scored 25 points and Steffi Strauss added 17 to help the Tigers defeat the Pioneers at Valencia. Valencia improves to 2-3 in league and 11-6 overall.

Savanna 53, Anaheim 23--Guard Venetta Dorlisa scored 18 points and Najla Coury added 12 as the Rebels (3-2, 10-10) had an easy game at home. Savanna led, 26-8, at halftime. Anaheim (0-5) was led by Teisha Clark’s 6 points and 12 rebounds.

In Freeway League action:

La Habra 69, Buena Park 31--Bridgette Austin scored 24 points, Robin Seabrook had 21 and Adele Alvarez added 16 to lead the Highlanders past the Coyotes at La Habra. The first-place Highlanders improve to 5-0 in league and 16-4 overall.

Fullerton 63, Sonora 46--Heidi Shikuma scored 22 points and had 8 assists, and Vicki Silva added 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the Indians defeat the Raiders at Fullerton. The Indians (4-1 in league, 13-5 overall) are in second place.

Troy 55, Sunny Hills 41--Susan Guest led the host Warriors with 16 points and Jennifer McCartney added 13 in Troy’s win over the Lancers. The Warriors improve to 2-3 league, 4-10 overall.

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 56, Laguna Beach 35--Michele Willard, the Sea Kings’ 6-1 center, scored 22 points and grabbed 27 rebounds to lead host Corona del Mar past the Artists. K.C. Jones added 22 points for the first-place Sea Kings, who improve to 8-0 in league and 11-7 overall.

Saddleback 59, University 45--Monica Walton scored 32 points to lead the Roadrunners to the win at Saddleback High. Saddleback is now 6-2 in league and 6-7 overall. University is 0-8 in league.

Costa Mesa 44, Estancia 43--Stephanie Swanson and Suzanne Cowley each scored 8 points for the Mustangs to offset Leslie Self’s 16 points for the Eagles at Estancia High. Costa Mesa improves to 2-6 in league (2-12 overall); the Eagles are 3-5 league.

Woodbridge 54, Newport Harbor 31--Kathy Millat scored 18 points and Gilly Powell added 14 for the second-place Warriors (7-1 in league, 13-6 overall) at Newport Harbor High.

In Century League action:

Foothill 77, Santa Ana 20--Chris McFerson scored 14 points, Felice Geddy had 13 and Stephanie Fleischaker added 12 to lead the Knights to an easy win over the Saints at Foothill High. The Knights improve to 8-0 in league and 18-1 overall, their only loss coming to Esperanza in the Brea Tournament.

Santa Ana Valley 40, Villa Park 35--The Falcons trailed, 23-19, at halftime but came back behind the play of Tamiko Bell, who scored 9 of her 13 points in the second half at Villa Park High. Cathy Smith led Santa Ana Valley (2-6 league, 7-7 overall) with 21 points.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 65, St. Paul 31--The Monarchs ran their league record to 6-0 (16-7 overall) by defeating the Swordsmen at Mater Dei High. Kim Ellerman led the Monarchs with 16 points and Geri Gainey added 15.

In South Coast League action:

El Toro 62, Capistrano Valley 34--Andrea Young scored 12 points and Elaine Youngs and Kathy Nickel each added 10 for the Chargers (7-0, 15-5) in their win over the Cougars (4-3) at El Toro High.

In Olympic League action:

Whittier Christian 80, Maranatha 41--Cindy Vyskocil scored 43 points and Toya Ellis added 20 to lead the Heralds (8-1, 12-3) past the Minutemen at Whittier Christian High.
