Huntington Beach : City Gets No Nibbles From Fishing Firms
The city has been trying to lure sportfishing boats back to its recently restored pier, but boat operators are not biting.
The city has advertised the availability of the pier facilities in various fishing publications, but so far no sportfishing operation has shown any interest, said Melvin Bowman, community services director. The city is asking the operator to pay a minimum of $500 a month or 5% of gross revenues, whichever is greater, and have at least $1 million in liability, property and fire insurance.
Operators cite the cost of insurance, the pier’s distance from the boats’ home harbors and the lack of fish in the area as reasons why they have not tendered offers, Bowman said.
The pier reopened Sept. 21 after a two-year, $900,000 refurbishment that included the rebuilding of the boat ramp that was destroyed in a 1975 storm.
