Cal Lutheran Signs Two, Loses One

Two high school players, John Goslin of Royal High and Michael Parks of St. Bernard, signed letters of intent at Cal Lutheran on Wednesday.

Cal Lutheran recruiting coordinator Pete Alamar said that more signings will be announced later this week.

Goslin, a 6-3, 230-pound defensive lineman, was selected All-Marmonte League and was named his team’s most valuable player last season. His decision to attend Cal Lutheran wasn’t a surprise because three Kingsmen assistant coaches--Gene Uebelhart, Jim Bauer and Don Reyes--teach at Royal.

Parks, a 6-1, 180-pound tailback, was voted to the All-Camino Real League team after playing in only six games last season. But in those six games--five as a running back and one as a wide receiver--he gained 1,006 yards rushing and finished with 1,649 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns.

Another player that Cal Lutheran recruited heavily, Thousand Oaks’ wide receiver Mike Trevathan, decided Tuesday to attend the University of Montana, a Division I-AA school. Trevathan’s father, Bob, played halfback at Cal Lutheran from 1962-65, the first four years the school had a football team. The family’s home is a few blocks from the college.

“I’ve lived in Thousand Oaks a long time,” Mike Trevathan said. “It’s time to get away. If Cal Lutheran was in another town, I probably would have gone there.”

Not all signings were announced Wednesday because freshmen must have a 3.0 grade-point average in high school to qualify for a scholarship at Cal Lutheran. Care is taken to ensure that players who are signed meet the requirements.

“We’ll probably sign six or seven more,” Alamar said. “There might be a couple of surprises, kids off good football teams.”

Signing Notes

Six junior college players have transferred to Cal Lutheran, including:

-- Terry Rowe, a 6-1, 205-pound inside linebacker from Glendale College in Arizona.

-- David Moore, a 6-2, 205-pound strong safety from Phoenix College. “David will play rover for us, a position that has both pass and run responsibility,” Alamar said.

-- Russell Patterson, a 6-0, 215-pound nose guard from San Mateo College. “He runs a 4.6 40 and is really quick,” Alamar said.

-- Mark Jones, a 6-3, 235-pound tight end from Gavelin College. All-Western Football Conference tight end Darren Gottschalk is returning to Cal Lutheran, but Alamar said: “With the addition of Jones, we’ll be able to use sets with two tight ends.”

-- Oscar Williams, a 5-11, 175-pound cornerback from Ventura College. “He’s very fast and has tremendous leaping ability,” Alamar said.

-- John Hynes, a 6-4, 250-pound defensive tackle who did not play football last season. Hynes has played at the University of Indiana and Long Beach City College. He will be a senior next season.
