Community College Roundup : Rancho Santiago Softball Team Sweeps

The Rancho Santiago College women’s softball team won two nonconference games at Taft Monday, beating Taft, 3-0, and Sacramento City College, 6-3.

In the opener, Julie Hurtado walked with the bases loaded in the third inning to force in the winning run. Pitcher Kim Martin picked up her initial win of the season.

In the second game, Sandy Martinez singled in the go-ahead run the fifth inning to put the Dons ahead, 3-2.

Rancho Santiago’s Laura Janzen hit a three-run triple in the same inning.

Pitcher Lorraine Kalehuawehe picked up her first win in that game.

Rancho Santiago (2-0 overall) next plays host to El Camino College Thursday.

In men’s community college baseball:

Cypress College 6, Pima College (Ariz.) 3--Pat Longo went 2 for 3 with a home run to lead Cypress College to the championship of the College of the Desert Tournament in Palm Springs.

Dave Rice, the winning pitcher, was relieved by Jeff Mooney and Randy Bouman.

In an earlier semifinal game Monday, Cypress also defeated Chaffey College, 13-0.

Mark Bac and Chris Kocman of Cypress (5-0) were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

L.A. Harbor 9, Orange Coast 3--The Pirates had only four hits in the loss at OCC. Jon Dishon was the losing pitcher. OCC (2-1) plays host to Long Beach City College Wednesday.

Golden West 8, Cal Poly Pomona (junior varsity) 0--Adam Sanchez pitched five innings, giving up three hits and striking out five to lead the Rustlers to a nonconference win at Golden West.

Dean Douty relieved Sanchez and did not give up a hit in the final four innings. Golden West is at Palomar Wednesday.

In South Coast Conference women’s basketball games:

Orange Coast College 87, Rancho Santiago 60--Melissa Fejdasz scored 24 points to lead the Pirates at Rancho Santiago. Leah Palmer led the Dons with 20 points. Rancho Santiago is at Cypress Wednesday.

Cerritos 80, Compton 71--Jane Hentzen scored 20 points to lead the Falcons at Compton. Betty Gross of Compton led all scorers with 28 points. Cerritos raised its record to 12-2 and 22-6. Compton fell to 6-7 and 12-11. Cerritos plays host to Mt. SAC Wednesday.
