Roundup : Monetta Leads Ramona Pass Carlsbad

Ramona High School may not be in contention for the Avocado League title, but the Bulldogs and their senior guard, John Monetta, played like champions Thursday night.

Monetta scored 8 points, but had 17 assists, the third highest total in San Diego Section history, as Ramona defeated Carlsbad, 90-51, at Ramona.

Ramona senior Craig Stoker scored a career-high 21 points. Mike Pendell scored 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter when the Bulldogs (8-4 in league, 14-8 overall) outscored the Lancers, 28-12, to take a 43-27 halftime lead. John Leichty scored all of his 10 in the second period.

Tim Smith scored 20 for Carlsbad (4-8, 7-15). Robert Cronic added 16 for the Bulldogs.

In other Avocado League action:

San Pasqual 67, Escondido 47--The score was tied at 11-11 after the first period, but a 15-point binge by San Pasqual’s Rich Prusinski in the second period, including 7-for-8 shooting from the free throw line, gave the host Eagles a 36-22 halftime lead. Escondido (2-10, 8-15) rallied in the final minutes, coming within five of San Pasqual, but Leonard Rodriguez’s 11 points in the final period secured the win for the Eagles.

Prusinski finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for San Pasqual (8-4, 13-8). Rodriguez added 17 for the Eagles, including a 9-of-10 performance from the foul line. Paul Baldwin led the Cougars with 10 points.

El Camino 99, San Marcos 64--Ken Crawford scored 27 points and Nate Reed added 24 as the No. 3 Wildcats (11-1, 22-3) beat the Knights (0-12, 1-20), at San Marcos.

PALOMAR LEAGUE Vista 74, Fallbrook 47--Trailing, 26-21, at halftime, the visiting Panthers (4-8, 5-17) outscored the Warriors (3-9, 5-17), 53-21, in the second half. Fallbrook made only five field goals in the second half.

Vista blew open the game in the second quarter when it outscored Fallbrook, 22-8. Vista’s Mike Jones scored 15 and Sal Aunese had 13. Chris Hanson and Mark Ringcamp each had 14 for Fallbrook.

Torrey Pines 71, Orange Glen 58--After holding a 20-18 lead at the close of the first quarter, Torrey Pines switched to a zone defense in the second period and the Falcons took a 37-27 lead at the half. Torrey Pines, paced by Scot Thompson’s 12-of-12 fourth-period foul shooting, scored 20 of its 24 points from the line in the final period. Thompson was 16-of-16 from the line on the night.

Thompson lead all scorers with 24 points. Mike Radcliffe added 15 for Torrey Pines (4-8, 10-15). Corey Kelly paced Orange Glen (6-6, 10-15) with 22 points.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE El Capitan 64, Monte Vista 35--The Vaqueros (13-3, 18-4) won the league title outright by defeating Monte Vista at El Capitan.
