Orange County Prep Baseball : Snyder’s Pitching and Hitting Lead Capistrano Valley to 10-3 Victory

Brent Snyder, a junior right-hander, pitched a complete-game, five-hitter with five strikeouts Saturday and also had a big day at the plate to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 10-3 win over Corona del Mar and a split of a nonleague doubleheader on the Sea Kings’ field.

Corona del Mar came back to win the nightcap, 3-1, as junior right-hander Robert Hess pitched a four-hitter.

In addition to his pitching performance in the first game, Snyder went 4 for 5 and knocked in six runs, three of them on a home run in the sixth inning. Corona del Mar’s Kevin McLaughlin went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap to help the Sea Kings (2-1). The Cougars are 1-1.

In other nonleague action:

Costa Mesa 16-4, Orange 4-9--Catcher Brent Mayne hit a three-run homer and had five RBIs to lead the Mustangs in the opener at Orange High. Mike Salladay added four hits, Adam Remington went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and John Wigmore and Erik Paulson each had three hits for Costa Mesa (1-1).

Mike Clayton had a two-run single for the Panthers in the first inning of the second game and Steve Riddle later homered to give Orange (1-2) its first win of the season. Winning pitcher Frank Talafus allowed seven hits in 6 innings and struck out five.

Brea-Olinda 8-1, El Dorado 5-11--Fred Camarena had three hits and three RBIs in the opener to lead the Wildcats (1-2) to a win and a split with the Golden Hawks (3-1) at El Dorado High. Jim Murray gave up eight hits in 6 innings to earn the win. Kevin Schula took the loss.

The Golden Hawks won the second game on the strength of Jeff Petredes’ three-run home run and Rob Sporrer’s two hits (Sporrer also homered in the first game) and the pitching of Steve Gill, who threw a one-hitter over six innings and struck out seven.

Valencia 14-8, Villa Park 7-4--Junior shortstop Brett Gregory had six hits and four RBIs to lead the Tigers (3-0) past the Spartans (0-4) twice at Villa Park High. Gregory went 4 for 4 with two doubles and a homer in the first game and added two hits, two runs and an RBI in the second.

Tim Churchill, the winning pitcher in the opener, went 3 for 5 with a home run, two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. Steve Patino led Villa Park in the nightcap with a home run, a double and four RBIs.

Mater Dei 8-11, Marina 1-3--Rich Huntington knocked in five runs to lead the Monarchs to a sweep at Blair Field in Long Beach. John Dworzak added three hits, including two doubles, and Jim Mathews went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs in the first game, while Kevin O’Connor and Jim Oldham each had two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Mater Dei pitchers Steve Watson and Mike McCarthy each allowed one hit in five innings to earn wins, as the Monarchs opened the season with two wins.

Saddleback 8-13, Sunny Hills 3-1--Myron Butler went 4 for 9 with 2 RBIs and Chris Silva went 3 for 9 with four RBIs to lead the Roadrunners to a season-opening sweep at Sunny Hills High. The Lancers fall to 1-3.

Santiago 9-13, Buena Park 3-5--Ed Eller homered in both games and knocked in seven runs on the day to lead the Cavaliers to a sweep at Santiago High. Joe Marquez added three hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader, while Trinidad Cisneros and Anthony Candales each earned pitching wins.

Corona 4-3, Canyon 2-4--Jim Restivo’s RBI single scored Ralph Garcia in the sixth inning of the nightcap to give the Comanches a 4-2 lead, and Canyon (2-1) held on to earn the split with the Panthers at Corona High School. Mike Townley was the winning pitcher for the Comanches, and Mike Sliemers had four hits.

Fullerton 9-6, Garden Grove 4-7--Mark Kiefer and Jerry Canada each hit two-run home runs and Donnie Lockman went 4 for 4 in the nightcap to lead the Argonauts (1-1) to a split with the Indians (2-1) at Fullerton High. Steve Moore went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Jeff Bailey added a double and an RBI in the first game.

La Habra 3-3, La Mirada 1-6--Gary Mixon (1-0) pitched a complete game and struck out five to lead the Highlanders (1-1) to the win in the opener at La Mirada High. La Habra was held to one hit in the second game.

Trabuco Hills 18-15, Hesperia Christian 3-3--Sean Naylor went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer and Scott Kriech went 3 for 4 with four RBIs in the first game, and Chris Gilbert homered in the second game to lead the Mustangs (4-0) to a sweep of the Patriots at Hesperia Christian High.

University 3, Laguna Hills 2--Catcher Jeff Baker hit a home run and a double, entered the game as a pitcher with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning and recorded the final out for a save, as the Trojans (1-0) defeated the Hawks (1-2) at Laguna Hills High.

Todd Krueger allowed one hit in the first four innings to earn the victory. Laguna Hills had trailed, 3-0, entering the seventh inning but scored twice on four walks and two University errors until Baker entered the game.

In Loara Tournament action:

Dana Hills 8, Western 5 (nine innings)--With two outs in the top of the ninth inning and no one on base, the Dolphins (1-1) scored three runs to defeat the Pioneers (0-2) in a second-round, consolation game played at Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.

With two strikes, Eddie Esteban was awarded first base on a catcher’s interference call. He stole second and scored on Greg Erickson’s double to left field. Erickson stole third and scored on a wild throw. Dave Lyon then tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Reliever Brian Hatch allowed one hit over the last four innings to earn the pitching win.

In El Segundo Tournament action:

Westminster 8, Millikan 2--The Lions won in a championship second-round game.

Santa Ana Valley 4-4, Bolsa Grande 2-6--Daryll Lievanos pitched a four-hitter to lead the Falcons to the win in the opener, and Tony Beall struck out eight in five innings to lead the Matadors to the win in the nightcap, as the teams split a doubleheader at Santa Ana Valley High. Carlos Lopez had five hits on the day for the Falcons.
