Tennis Roundup : UCI Beats Rice, Raises Record to 8-3

Bruce Man Son Hing defeated Scott Melville at No. 1 singles to lead UC Irvine to a 6-3 win over Rice in a non-conference men’s tennis match at UCI Tuesday.

Man Son Hing won his match over Melville, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. With the win, UCI raised its overall record to 8-3. Rice fell to 10-3.

UCI plays host to Kansas Monday.

In South Coast Conference play:

Cypress 6, Mt. SAC 3--On the strength of a near-sweep in singles play, the Chargers defeated the Mounties at Mt. SAC. The Chargers, led by No. 1 singles player Bruce Beinlich, won five of the six singles matches to clinch the match before the doubles action was completed. Beinlich defeated Mt. SAC’s No. 1 player, Jay Excell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in the closest singles match of the day. Cypress is 2-1 in conference and 2-3 overall. The Mounties are 1-1.

Saddleback 9, Fullerton 0--The Gauchos’ John Rusk won his matches at No. 1 singles and doubles to lead the shutout at Saddleback. Saddleback raised its record to 3-0 and 4-1. Fullerton fell to 1-2 in conference play.

In women’s community college play:

Golden West 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Val Spinosa and Julie Fleming led the way for the Rustlers as both players beat their opponents in singles competition by 6-0, 6-0 scores at Golden West. The win improved the Rustlers’ South Coast Conference record to 3-0 and overall mark to 7-0.
